Buying Advice

First, I want to say that I am a complete n00b... but I absolutely love what the CHDK software is capable of doing. I really appreciate the effort and time that the community has put into this idea... allowing me and many other photo loonies to take awesome photos :D

So, here is my problem:
I have been looking at the list of supported cameras, I determined that the A650 IS is the best camera for my purposes (I am an amateur photographer wanting to take both quick shots and some more professional stuff, while not being too large and bulky.) Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anywhere to buy it new because it is discontinued. Sad.

So the question is, what other camera that isn't discontinued, do you guys suggest?
Also, I have been led to believe that the A650 IS is better than any other A*** camera that canon has out right now, mainly because of its Sensor Size and Pixel Density (which are better than another other A*** camera.) Will these improvements actually matter? Does the CHDK level the playing field?

Thank you so much!
Elf

CHDK isn't able to make the sensor less noisy, but it will allow you to exploit the camera to extents where the high noise level will annoy you even more than it would if you didn't have those added features... :D

Maybe the G series? I haven't followed the CHDK porting progress on those, though.

LOL! Thanks for the reply! :)

The G-series does look nice, but the G7 is the only one fully ported (and canon no longer sells it!) and the G9 is listed as "Firmware dump available, but uses a new OS that is fundamentally different from all previous cameras that were successfully ported."

But they are very nice cameras! :D

Thanks!

Oh, wow. If that is true, then my list looks a lot more optimistic! Thanks!

And an additional question: Does the CHDK also include the language used on the camera? I ask this because I can find foreign A650is cameras, but no well-priced English Language ones.

Thanks,
Kieran

CHDK is available with many interface languages, see CHDK wikia: Languages and languages delivered in the complete package, it can be easily translated to almost any other interface language.
The default language on a fresh installation (new config file) is always english, it can be switched within the CHDK 'Visual settings' menu.
The following OSD-Codepages are available in CHDK: [Win1250] East European Latin, [Win1251] Cyrillic, [Win1252] West European Latin ANSI, [Win1254] Turkish, [Win1257] Baltic.

Hmm.. the way i read elf's Q is if CHDK contains Canon language strings - which it doesn't, of course ...
that's (c) material.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I got the info I am looking for! I will probably end up with the A720 IS.

Also, another question (you can blame PhyrePhoX for this next n00b question)...

What does CHDK stand for? If it means 'Coders HUmiliate DSLR Kiddies', that is just hilarious!

Thanks!
Elf
