I am a fan of the sports photography look for a camera pro or half pro that works with the trick of the CHDK (more than 1/8000 of speed of throttler to have athletes' better movement, between 10x and 15x or more of zoom, minimum 5 photos per second).

In order that they know I use her Powershot A720 IS that gave me.

i would suggest s-series, like s5is etc. but you need very strong light sources for 1/8000 (and strong flash is normally forbidden at sports events).

.. minimum 5 photos per second). ..

All of your requested features can hardly be achieved with CHDK & a P&S cam, but are easily available in a good dslr & a fast lens.

Though, i concur with phyrephox, with a S5 (or the newer SX1 / SX10) you will get the closest to your request. (But be aware that the SX1 / SX10 are not yet ported, and it is not know if it is even possible)

Are the S series camera capable of faster than the normal ca. 1,5 fps of all these Canon P&S's? Like some sports mode with lower resolution but still with better image quality than movie mode?

And note that for those 1/8000 s Tv's you'll need to use high ISO (if flash is not an option), which means a LOT of noise from our tiny CCD pixels and also bursts MUCH slower than the already slow (to you) 1,5 fps due to noise reduction processing in the camera taking some time to finish for each and every shot.

well, s-series has a sports mode, which is continious PLUS autofocus. but its not better than manual settings. s3is seems to be able to do faster than 1,5 fps, s5is is slower (more MP). s-series has the best optics for sports - fast (light wise), huge range and especially it is fast (mechanically wise). plus since it uses 4 aas, it lasts long, energy wise.

IMO the only one from the S-series will be the new SX1 with 4 fps - it uses a new Canon CMOS sensor instead of the slower CCD in e.g. the new SX10 (only with 1.4 fps)...
