Verified this works on SD500.  Works like a charm! (even when zooming in a little, them zoom out to orig focal length)  Can we include this in all the regular builds, so that everybody will have MF?  All that needs to happen is that before MF is engaged, the cam needs to zoom in to next value, then zoom out, then enable MF.

I cant figure out why the cam freezes if the zoom wasnt used, but i guess there is a reason.. dont believe that a automated zoom in & out is necessary.. (If that is what you had in mind)

Still wondering, is this a hardware or software problem? Something has to change when the cam zooms - i just cant figure out what.. Ideas?

Hacki, looks like a missing start (initializing) value somewhere in the SD / MF routine  ?

hmm!  now we're possibly getting somewhere...  Nickman tested it with an IXUS700 and it worked;  I tested with my SD500 and every time I attempt to adjust Subject Distance with the zoom rocker, the camera powers down with lens out.  I am running cyril's build, with fw 101a.   I'm not sure why there would be a difference between the IXUS and SD, but if you can give me detailed testing steps, I'll trace this down and hopefully we'll have something usable for all SD500 owners...

Let me know the specific steps to take and any memory dumps, etc that you require (and how to do them, since I'm new to CHDK troubleshooting...)

Cheers!

I have also tested this build on my IXUS 700 1.01a and it crashes every single time i try to shoot after setting manual focus.

I'm all yours together with my cam hardware for your tests. I'd just love to have ability to do focus bracketing shots!

Keep up the good work guys!

Best regards,
Bushman

@InnerBushman:
...try the following: zoom in and out one time before using MF (or other SD setting), otherwise the cam will crash...

Hi, in my a495 port I implement manual focus shortcut key outside ALT mode. (enabled only if the camera have zoom lever and didn't have manual focus).

It works by half-press shoot button and press zoom button to change subject distance. This is still not stable as it may crash the camera if overriding subject distance while the camera still try to (auto) focus... I need to find a way to know weather the camera is AF or not.

Maybe this feature can be added to other model too?

Patches can be seen here: http://gitorious.org/canon-powershot-a495-chdk/canon-powershot-a495-chdk/commit/5d0ff2afe3e7860e0ed10d029005f4e2dad420ca

(I'm always wanted to do manual focus in camera)

I don't have the stuff (nor skills) necessary to compile so i can't try your patch. Is there anyone who could compile it and provide bins?
