A 590 sensing the Flash operation & shutter curtain

Hi Is anybody able to tell me if there is any way of sensing when the flash operates ( is this in the firmware dump ) & also when the first & second curtains of the shutter operate so as to create special effects with second curtain flash trigger or is this only possible on cameras such as the A720 which already has second curtain operation possibly through mechanical means

yes, it's possible via scripts using the motion detection fuction
see an example here:
UBASIC/Scripts:Lightning script -- Fudgey - CHDK Wiki
(copy-paste to a text file and place it in the chdk\scripts folder and rename it to have ".bas" extension)
try to search on the forum for other ones if this doesn't work

i forgot to tell that the camera may miss the light of the flash if scene is well lit. generally it doesn't miss in lower light.
btw i didn't deeply understand your question, only i tried to guess what you may need

~~it would be nice to know what camera you got~~

if you need rear curtain flash on a camera without such option maybe you got luck,
because evawr added rear curtain flash sync for a570 & sx100is a few weeks ago
