how can you find out if a camera has a real aperture (iris) and/ or an nd filter?

I think that in most cameras, you can probably just look in to the lens, and you can see the iris if any.

yes, the iris can be seen, just point the camera during record/preview mode (use auto mode) to a ligth source and you'll see closing.
with ND filter probaly you can hear only a click when kicking in/out, not sure how it's acting.
As i know all powershots got iris, G series have both, only ixuses got ND filter because of the very compact lens.

Yes, you can also see the ND filter swinging in & out when you hold the camera against a strong light, you can also hear it clicking.

Another sign for the presence of a ND filter: only 2 F-stops (without the zoom), e.g. F/2.8 (ND filter out, not active) and F/8.0 (ND filter is active).

Not all Powershots has a real aperture (iris diaphragm), some of the cheaper ones has a ND filter instead: A450, A460, A530, A550, A560 & TX1.

i didn't know that the cheap series got ND filter, too, but for sure, it's cheaper a piece of plastic than a complicated iris mechanism
