I used the "bracket in continuous mode" of CHDK to take a bunch of pictures real quick hand held.  These pictures were taken in Joshua Tree National Park last week (taken here).  I used Dynamic Photo HDR to process the pictures.

The first one shows the originals and the resulting combination of them.  There was no way to get the clouds back lit by the sunrise and the ground exposed properly at the same time with just a single exposure.

The second one is the result of combining the 3 photos using the "Photographic" option in DPHDR.

For the third one I only used the proper exposure and underexposed pictures.  I think this worked much better because the overexposed picture didn't really have anything to add.  I used the "Eye-Catching" option in DPHDR and dumbed it down some to still look somewhat realistic.

You did it with the raw pictures or the jpegs?

Thanks, I did it with jpegs.  I haven't started messing with raw yet...now you are making me wonder how a single raw image would have done.  I am going to try messing with DPHDR again and see if I can get an image to look like a simple combination of the underexposed sky and the properly exposed land.  More like an old school combination of 2 negatives, masking, and exposing.  The HDR's look cool but I want something that looks like it wasn't processed.  The first HDR looks close...but the clouds look like they were painted on.

Has anyone else used DPHDR?  Any suggestions?

Edit:
I think I'm going to have to break down and get Photoshop.  No matter what I try in DPHDR I can't get it the way I want.  The sky, hills, and flat land all end up wanting different compensation.

Have you tried Gimp yet? It's a lot cheaper than Photoshop.

I'll have to take a look a Gimp.  Thanks for the link.

Here is one more that I did.  I think it looks realistic enough to be convincing to people that don't know I messed with it.

I use Picturenaut and qtpfsgui. Picturenaut is more easier, but has less options then qtpfsgui.
Mostly I use Picturenaut.

I finally got it to work...not very user friendly.  Because I hand held the camera the images are a bit off.  The auto alignment won't align the images and there is no manual align option.  I'll give qtpfsgui a try.

Just gave Photomatrix a try and it won't align the images either.  As I normally don't go out just to photograph bringing along a tripod is for the most part out of the question.  It looks like DPHDR is the best for me so far.

Trying Qtpfsgui right now.  I'm not a big fan of the name but the program rocks.  The alignment got it very close and had a manual fine tuning option that popped up on it's own.  It seems a bit slow (edit3 VERY SLOW).  I'll post up the result in a bit.

...Well I got this with Qtpfsgui.  Any bigger was taking forever.  I like how it turned out but wow is this program S L O W !

I tried to complicate things this time by doing a panoramic HDR.  This one was done on a pocket sized tripod with 6 images (3 top, 3 bottom).  Exposures were at F2.8 x 5s, 15s, 1.3s on my A720is.  I used manual exposure and set the first image at 0.  I had a custom delay of 5 seconds and 3 pictures using CHDK to change the exposure +-2Ev.  It was dark enough that seeing the buttons on the camera was a problem.  I used DPHDR and didn't have to align the images because I was using a tripod and not touching the camera.  Then for stitching I have been playing with AutoPano and Hugin.  AutoPano works great most of the time as long as it auto-aligns them properly.  Hugin is easier to align manually and is open source.  In other words I stitched the 2 resulting HDR's.
