Remote monitor?

I would love to be able to plug a very small monitor into my 850 so I could see the image on the camera's screen. Could this be feasible somehow? Ideally my phone (an Android G1) would be the monitor.

No, not really unless your camera has a video output jack like found in A series cameras.

Thanks. Yes, it does have a video out jack and comes with a lead for connecting it to a TV. The video output signal is switchable between NTSC and PAL.

I already have 2 devices with displays which would serve well as monitors. One is my G1/Android phone, which has a mini USB input. The other is a Cowon iAudio portable music player which has a mini USB and a Line In socket.

I doubt either of those could be made to work.

To get video over USB, you'd need a USB video capture device (quite cheap and readily available) and a USB host. MP3 players and phones are typically USB devices, not USB hosts.

A quick google suggests that the G1 hardware may actually be host capable, but the software is not. Even if you managed to get around this, you'd need drivers to support your USB capture device, and enough CPU power (and bus bandwidth etc) to display it at a reasonable frame rate.

Assuming the line in on your MP3 player is audio (it appears to be), there is zero chance of that being of any use.

It would be far simpler to just buy a small NTSC/PAL capable LCD display. You can find some on sites dealextreme, ebay etc.

Now why didn't I think of just plugging in a portable TV? I'm not very clever at this stuff. I want one as small as possible - there's an old Casio portable with a 1.5 inch screen on ebay, item 120353090134. I need to find out what connectors it's got.

DealExtreme: $58.46 3.5-inch TFT 640*480px Dual Inputs LCD Parking + AV Monitor for Cars (NTSC/PAL 12V DC)

DealExtreme: $35.44 EP-125NP Professional 2.5" Wide Screen TFT LCD with Built-in Speaker and RCA Video Input (NTSC/PAL)

Note that I have no direct experience with these, and the quality is probably poor. They also require a 12v power supply, but a suitable battery pack would be trivial to make.
