apologies if i offend anyone by posting this here but there isn't a good forum for canon hardware hacking so i thought i'd post it to one of the most technical boards.

i just realized that my canon a650 fits perfectly into the camera housing if i just let it press against the sides. the problem? the power jack is on the side!

solution - power the camera through the battery port.

the camera takes 4 AA batteries. most likely two sets of two in parallel to double the voltage. (i think that doubles the voltage.) the external power supply outputs 4.3v, 1.5A.

would it be a better idea to feed 3v through the battery compartment?

any other advice? i'm just taking a shot in the dark to find a solution to this problem.

I hear Canon sells external psus that do this for cameras that don't have a jack for external power. Likely going to work just find for your camera too.

Very likely 4 cells in series, it's not a particularly good idea to put NiMH cells in parallel (they can source high currents and could heat up dangerously if one cell is empty and one full). Nominal voltage of 4 * 1.2 V = 4.8 V is pretty close to your external PSU voltage too. If the compartment is anything like in the 2*AA cameras, you can easily see all the metal parts that do the connections and deduce from that.

It may not even start at a such a low voltage. For reference, my a570is (two AA) tends to shut down at 1 volt per cell (2 V total), which would mean a prediction of 4 V minimum suitable supply for your camera.

So I'd just hook up your 4.5V external psu in place of the batteries and see what happens.
