O.K.
I'm now testing this CHDK with RAW images in DNG format.
And yes, sometimes it hangs (for example, shuts off after shooting), unfortunately.

Sorry for being completely "n00b" :-[, but what's the purpose for the reader.c file?
Should it be compiled? And then?
or should it be copied to the sd-card together with the other chdk-files?

yeah reader.c needs to be compiled, it a converter from the RAW image format from the ixus85 to something that photoshop can read.

it is obsolete if you just save DNG from your cam.

Mhh, which brings us to the question if a simple diff from the IXUS 85 applied to the FW of IXUS 90 would work... (maybe with a few hunks). As far as I know the two cameras ar identical except the display size (resolution of the screen ist identical thougt on the IXUS 90 it is 3" screen) and the controllwheel.
No, it almost certain the memory addresses are different. They are usually different between different canon firmware versions of the same camera, never mind different models.

Okay, thats sad :-(

Thanks for the info.

Kind regards
blubbi

Got my camera back and this is awesome!  More choices then i thought possible, guess i've got some reading to do.  Having some trouble with the RAW/DNG files, will have to get my dead pixel count done first i guess.

Question, when taking a RAW+JPG it takes a long time for the camera to come back... i assume it's saving, about 12 seconds.  Is that normal or do i have a REALLY slow SD card?

========
Update: Got a class 6 SD card and it now saves in about 2 seconds.

Sharky, have you found a way to troubleshoot CHDK crashes?

I have also a functionality question:
Is it possible to override aperture with this camera and CHDK?

For my camera, it takes about half this time (4-5s) to save DNG, and quarter of this time (2-3s) to save to CHDK RAW.

hah

that's the main reason for looking for CHDK when I first found CHDK.

Unfortunately, these cam's don't have a variable aperture (iris), because they're CHEAP :) It only has an ND filter (see the wiki page http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/ND_Filter). So, no variable DOF for you ...

By the way, the reason you sometimes DO see a different f/number is that you're zooming. The aperture stays the same, but the focal length changes, which modifies the f/number. And I read somewhere that it always shows f/8 when the ND filter is on.

The crashes: I don't think you can help unless you can see some kind of pattern in when it crashes. I think I must be looking at the wrong buffer sometimes.

About RAW saving speed: My cam saves the 15M Raw pics in a few seconds (3 or 4), so I'm guessing the only variable is SD card speed.

The pattern shows that there is SOME information there, but most of it is just noise.

On the contrary, I find that VERY interesting...

At least there is some information! A resized and smoothed version of the image shows the typical pattern of a cropped gradient in luminosity, similar to what happens when you cut an onion with a knife that does not pass through the center of the onion itself

on the other hand, the histogram of your image is very interesting and shows some artificial patterna that are definitely artifacts, not real "signal". I can't really understand what those "bumps" are, it's interesting that their width is exactly 1/16th of the whole range... Maybe it's the decoding of the RAW's bayer pattern...
Unless if comes from the fact that resized the image. That's also likely.
Do you have the original-sized DNG?
