Advice Needed for a CHDK Noob

My P80 was stolen, and next week I'll receive an insurance check to replace it.  I was never happy with the performance of the P80, the images were horrible.  I felt like my old 3.2M Mavica took sharper images.

I'm seriously considering getting a Canon SX10, because I want a camera with decent resolution and a good optical zoom.  I'm not a noob in general, everything in my house runs the latest firmware available for it.  I'm really enthusiastic about the features CHDK brings, including RAW format.  I also know that the SX10 isn't supported yet.

I'm not looking for a quote that it will be supported, or a date when CHDK will be available for the SX10.  I'm more interested in knowing what kind of interest there is for CHDK on the SX10, how much interest starts the ball rolling, and if there's anything I can do help.

As I said, I'm only a noob when it comes to CHDK.  I can compile source code on LINUX, I can write shell scripts, I understand flashing, etc.  I'm simply trying to learn a little more about CHDK.

Any insight would be helpful....if you can suggest an alternate model that has the same/similar features that has a higher chance of being supported, I would be open to that as well.

Thanks for your time!

If you are interested in trying to port it yourself, see For Developers - CHDK Wiki
and particularly Adding support of a new camera - CHDK Wiki

Some of the recent porting threads, such as Porting chdk to the G9 also have some good advice.

If you are considering doing the port yourself, it's pretty much essential that you have a decent grasp of assembler.

If and when particular camera is ported depends entirely on a qualified developer having the camera. Overall interest on the forum has no effect. You can find models with dozens of "when is X going to be ported" threads over many months, while others are ported despite having no apparent interest.

Assembler isn't anything I've dealt with in the past.  However, from my understanding you can't really screw your camera up with CHDK because it's loaded on top of the camera's firmware at runtime, right?

I'll follow the other thread you referenced, and try to become more familiar with the porting process.

Thanks for you reply and information...

So after a review, I've decided that this is out of my league.  I'm not an assembler person by any means and my schedule right now simply will not allow me to pick up another project.

ADMIN COMMENTED OUT. READ THE RULES. http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2.0.html

I'm not trying to be impatient, I would just love to be able to shoot RAW, and have the other features of CHDK.
