when i first saw the thread title, i thought "1.0.0 release - whats the point??" 1.0 isn't as important as it used to be.

but then i saw the feature list and thought "yes, i want 1.0!"

from what i've experienced with chdk, the biggest obstacle to providing a stable chdk is testing the software across all cameras. i think it would be extremely helpful to test each and every chdk feature across all cameras. yes, that is very difficult. however, if we make it easy for individuals to contribute then its not so bad. the solution to this is a database which cross references features, chdk revisions, and user results. i'm curious if there is an "off the shelf" solution to this because creating your own database driven web solution would be quite time consuming.

i'm not sure if thats useful feedback for the 1.0 discussion but its something i'd like to see chdk gain.

thanks!

...fe50's thoughts:

The download pages have much traffic, must be paid (BIG THX to our 'mighty-hoernsche' !)...maybe we can host 'stable' versions (changing all ~ 2 or 3 months) on a 'free' hoster, maybe on a drop...www.drop.io - 100MB should be enough...

If you'll ever need a mirror for the stuff or somewhere to host the files, I have a dedicated server and I can donate bandwidth.

It would look more serious compared to zshare or other free sites.

I'm a CG artist. I'd like to contribute to CHDK. Is there any way I can help? :)

I`m sorry for writing here, but could it be face detection in final version of the script?

Wow, it would be really nice to get era 1.x...
I think CHDK releases should include the cool guide ALTMNGD, since it is a must-have help file.

A proposal:
  • We declare the current trunk to be the "stable" version, and release it as 1.0 (or maybe 1.x since CHDKDE already took 1.0 ?)
  • A branch is created from the stable version, for ongoing bug fixes
  • The trunk becomes a development branch for 2.x
  • Work continues in the trunk

Reason:
In effect, the current autobuild is treated as a stable release. It's the only option available to end users. This means I get stuck rejecting big changes because I don't want to see end users stuck with broken builds or rapidly changing / incompatible / incomplete features.

I don't like being in this position, there are a lot of good things that are too big, complicated and disruptive to get right in one or two commits. This is been true for a long time, but there are some particularly big ones coming up, including:
  • tsvstars modules
  • tsvstars other script changes
  • waterwingz remote code rework
  • PTP live view

The main requirement I see to implement this is the need to have builds available for both branches
  • The stable branch needs auto builds, or at least a fixed download location. I'd prefer autobuilds, because that will make it easier to do get minor bug fixes out.
  • The development branch needs autobuilds so people with a wide range of cameras can test it

We've discussed this in the past, going back and forth without any real conclusion. I don't want to do that again, so unless someone comes up with convincing objections, I'm going to make this this happen in some form before integrating the above mentioned changes in the trunk.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

As an end user with no programming experience I appreciate the programming contributions from all. I think that concluding the current branch and starting a 2 branch is an excellent idea. I don’t follow developments on a daily basis. I understand that there is a lot of code in the current branch that requires rewriting or cleaning up. Starting a new development and writing code from scratch would be a better proposition than breaking the existing code base.
