Looking at dpreview.com i don't see any differences except physical size. 

Sharky at CHDK for PowerShot SD770 IS / DIGITAL IXUS 85 IS is working on a CHDK release for the 770 which is awesome but a friend of mine has a 790... I guess time will tell, but should the 770 build work on the 790?

From a developers stand point how different are these two cameras?

The ixus90 / SD790 needs a separate port, brake is working on it, see here: ixus90/sd790 IS porting

edit: since CHDK needs a lot of firmware addresses, every cam model and almost every firmware
         version needs a separate port
