If you are hppy running stuff in a terminal window then mencoder does the job - see here http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-enc-images.html

I just downloaded mencoder from here http://ffmpegx.com/download.html - no need to get ffmpegx if all you want to do is turn a load of jpegs into an avi.

Or if not keen on Terminal, and you do a bit of video stuff then buying a Quicktime Pro key would be very worthwhile,
(Not very costly).
