don't format in camera!

To delete all my pix I hit "format" in the camera.
Now I wiped out CHDK and all my custom settings. :(

Can CHDK disable that format, so I don't do that again?

I'm affraid not. CHDK does not mess the original firmware.

Next time you tune your CHDK, backup the CCHDK.CFG file to your computer, that's where all configurations are stored.

I also hit "format" from time to time (they say it keeps the writing to SD card fast) but have a copy of CHDK in the portable photo storage, so I can get it back from the ashes like the Phoenix!

An alternative to "format" is to erase the folder using the CHDK's file browser.

Try programs like DataRecovery.

PS: That tool probably wont recover the chdk.cfg or diskboot.bin

drb: Use the 'Erase all' menu entry to delete all images.. And, no offense, but most people who know that "format" will delete something, also know that it will recreate the filesystem, and therefore effectively erases EVERYTHING on the old one. So, just remember that and try not to format your card ;)

Why do you think that?

Nevertheless it's worth to try some.

Because most file recovery tools are do so called "data carving", means they are looking for the header & footer of known file types, and as both cchdk.cfg and diskboot.bin are looking like "data garbabge", they wont be recovered. (they have unknown headers, if any - could be that different cchdk.cfg files even have different headers/footers)

I did in fact have a copy of CFG on my computer, but was slightly outdated, but no big deal.

Seems like the Canon format command *should* fail since the card write protect is enabled,  but I guess not.

No: write protect for SD cards is implemented in software, and CHDK just prevents the Canon software from 'seeing'
the lock - that's why your cam (with CHDK booted) can both take pictures and format cards with the lock on ...

cheers,
