DIG!C IV (Digic 4) and CHDK

Hi - I am a total CHDK noob about to probably foolishly buy a camera (after researching heavily).

Honestly I don`t like any of the latest canon digic 4 cameras - they are all a compromise on one major feature or another (i.e. lens zoom or physical size cf. to other brands, say... panasonic or fujifilm), but I want to use CHDK.

So - I thought I`d get an older SD850, which still doesnt have the lens range the other brands do, but allows use of CHDK, but it`s only available in a refurbished form for about $200 USD plus international shipping to my temporary residence in Japan.

However, I don`t want to pay a near new (digic 4 model) price for a 2 year old (refurbished) camera, that could go on to have further problems (ill be stuck without a camera, which is where I am at now).

So I am stuck with DIGIC 4 options, in the hope that one day someone will (be nice enough to buy a developer a digic 4 camera so they can) develop a CHDK for Digic 4???

Maybe I will have to take a risk and see...

In the meantime, my question is:

Can I buy a DIGIC 4 camera and just use a CHDK for DIGIC 3 (if both share the same OS)?
-Why I ask that is:
Isn`t Digic just a CPU-like processor? (If so...  - I always thought a cpu is OS independant, isn`t it?)

Looking at the porting process for other cameras, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Each camera seems to be different enough to make it imposable to use one CHDK for anything other than the camera it was written for.

Case in point the SX100 and the SX110, both look any have very simile features. The CHDK for the SX100 doesn't work for the SX110.

As for the lens range, get one of the PowerShots with the interchangeable lens systems.

Hope this helps.

Hej,
Huh, what's that ?

I agree with you that late 2008 canon cams were disappointing. I think the SX110 IS, though, is similiar to the old powershots A, except for the viewfinder maybe.

Of course here isn't CHDK yet and I can't tell of course which it will come out first for, but I bet SX110 is popular enough for that happens soons enough. And it hasn't DIGIT IV but III (another thing I don't understand from canon, why equip the lower models of the new line with the old DIGIT ?).
If you want a small IXUS, you prolly can find IXUS 80 or IXUS 860 (SD1100 and SD870) for sale and not second hand, SD870 it's a bit more than 200 euros here and SD1100 160 euros (usually it's around 200 dollar = 200 euros for cameras, despite the currencies values).

Hej,
Well it's not an interchangeable lens, just you can adapt wide angle, tele-converter or macro lens, but I think that doesn't exist anymore on recent powershots, not even on SX10 IS (lots of complain about it), even if some people are trying to find a solution anyway.

...but you can attach a 52mm filter (pol-filter) to the SX10 IS, but carefully - what looks like a winding isn't really a winding and just made to hold the lenscap... however - it works!

Every camera needs a unique port of CHDK. Different canon firmware versions of the same camera also generally require new version of CHDK as well, although there are a few exceptions. This has nothing to do with OS or processor. CHDK is not a normal program running on a normal OS, it's hack based on reverse engineering.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I live in Japan right now and I just purchased a second hand IXY 910IS (SD870IS/IXUS860IS) from Softmap in Shinjuku for 13,000 Yen on New Years Day. Even though it's second hand, the outside of the camera is completely fine with no scratches. The screen also don't have any bad pixels as far as I can tell.

Since the 910 uses DIGIC III, CHDK works perfectly on it.
If you're not in the Tokyo area, you can always look on Softmap or Rakuten, or any other sites for good deals on 2nd hand cameras.

No, that has nothing to do with the fact that there's a port for it. See reyalps post above.

Hi again - Ok then, does anyone know if it`s at all possible to use CHDK with any Japanese-labelled `IXY` P&S Canon cameras?
