also i noticed that the propcase is writable, meaning we can set the language and/or video format (which isnt very useful right now, but might be useful to someone sometime).

Could you also change the language?

I have set a new value. Writing ist also possible for digicIII. But there was no new language to see. ???

Maybe language table is only camera (edit: and firmware version)dependent.
In PhyrePhox's list, for example:
 3074 = portuguese
In my a710:
 portugese: 3330

So, maybe exists simple rule:
 - open language dialog in camera
 - lang_number's high byte = lang_column*9+lang_row      (for 9 rows table, lang_column=0..2, lang_row=0..8 )

P.S. For newer cameras, also Farsi added.
P.P.S. I heard about firmware versions with only two languages: English and Chinese(or Japanese?). In this case we have (after propcase reading):
 English: 0
 Chinese: 256

yes u are right, didnt notice for example that on a620 the value for japanese and arabic is the opposite than on s3is - because they exchange their position in the menu.
so, how to overcome? a) only include the most used languages or b) read in cameras manuals the position of the lang items or c) just implement a generic way and hope it works on all cams and wait till someone complains :D

ewavr: how do you know the english/chinese stuff?

I can't find language menu screenshot in manuals. :(

Sometimes in russian CHDK forum I read message like: "I bought Powershot camera (ewavr: maybe in China), but there olny Englist and Chinese. Now to update firmware to get Russian?".
Correct answer is "Learn English (or Chinsese  :haha)!"

lol :D

yeah, i just checked s3is and g9 manual, no screenshot. so it is more or less guessing the lang table for each camera, the languages chdk supports havent arent different, are they? i mean for example we neither have arabic nor portuguese as lang files.

I've been trying help someone who's translated the CHDK menus to Greek. See
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2949.new.html
I've managed to produce the necessary 1253 codepage table to go in lib/font/codepages.h and make the change to core/gui.c to let this codepage be selected. However there's obviously more to do - apparently the current rbf font files don't have the necessary greek characters.

It's not possible to use the REB editor because that doesn't support 1253. However it doesn't support 1254 (Turkish) either, but I think CHDK does (at least 1254 is already defined in codepages.h).

Does anyone know how to proceed?

hm, this is interesting. in a similar way the chinese codepage would have to be added. i dont know this language stuff too well, but what i DO know, is that things that are not added to the bugtracker are unfortunately forgotten sometimes. we can discuss here, but someone also should open a ticket to adress these things.
