What camera should I purchase?

background:
I first had a Sony DSC H2, (a so-called "bridge" camera) quite happy of it, until I found out about CHDK.
Then I got an a570IS just to use CHDK on it.
At the moment, I carry with me both cameras, the sony for "normal" photos and the a570IS for chdk-esque things.

I really would like to upgrade now.

If I get a G9 I could somehow have the benefits of the Sony DSC AND be able to use CHDK.

If I sell the A570 and the Sony I would probably get the money I need for the G9 (mmh.. maybe a bit less)

The G9 could somehow do both jobs, with the following things that I feel as small problems:
- for chdk uses, the G9 has less battery life than the a570. I love timelapses and extreme stacking...
- for normal uses, the g9 has less zoom than the sony (6x vs. 12x)

A good thing is the native, 12bits RAWs, and of cource the increased resolution (not that I really care a lot about that)

What would you suggest me?

Any alternative to the g9?

thanks for any advice

well, battery life for timelapses is likely to get improved in newer chdk version (when we set the cam to sleep etc), also you could always build an external battery for the g9. so energy-wise i'd say get the g9.
zoom? yes, 6x is a lil too less for my taste (well, i got 12x on the s3is :D), but you could opt for a teleconverter, see here.

increased resolution might be nice, but is it wise considering ratio ccd size/pixel count? nonetheless, the g9 is a nice cam, and of course not cheap for a lot of reasons.

but i would probably go for an sx100, sx10 or even sx1 (i guess they will have chdk support some time..., the latter two). cant beat the zoom on those beasts, plus hot shoe and lot of other nice features. and new they can be had for less than the g9 costs used (i assume).

I am actually also dwelling in between getting a G10 or a Panasonic Lumix-LX3... I really preferred to  buy the LX3, mainly for its small size, but even though CHDK is not (yet!) ported to the G10 it's kind of a deal breaker... I would stick with the potential funcionality of a Canon with CHDK.

I am actually also dwelling in between getting a G10 or a Panasonic Lumix-LX3...

I am not disappointed with my Sony, and the reason I wanted to change was to have a better camera with CHDK.
So, this isn't a doubt for me, a Canon is what I am looking for, or otherwise I keep my Sony.

well, battery life for timelapses is likely to get improved in newer chdk version (when we set the cam to sleep etc), also you could always build an external battery for the g9. so energy-wise i'd say get the g9.

Nice site, with comparisons of real shots. thanks for the pointer...

Actually, the g9 has a slightly larger sensor:
G9
sensor size 1/1.7"
mp: 12
mp/cm2: 28

SX10
sensor size 1/2.5"
mp: 10
mp/cm2: 34

but i would probably go for an sx100, sx10 or even sx1 (i guess they will have chdk support some time..., the latter two). cant beat the zoom on those beasts, plus hot shoe and lot of other nice features.

I didn't really know the SX1....  CMOS sensor and 4 fps.... Wow!
Expensive, though..
Sx1 and Sx10 both have a terrific range (28-560mm eq),
Plus, I like the AA batteries...

and new they can be had for less than the g9 costs used (i assume).
ebay.it lowest "buy it" price is
SX10 309 Euro
G9 355 Euro
SX1 505 Euro ... Ok, let's forget that for the moment :-(

to sum it up (colored stuff is what I really care about...)
Sx10 Is
G9
CHDK
NOT YET
YES, NOW!
Lens
26-560mm
35-210mm
RAW
CHDK 10bit
Native 12bit
Mp
10
12
MP/cm2
35
28
fps
0,7
2
battery
2xAA
LI-Ion
weight
600g
370g
LCD
2.5"
3"
hot-shoe
no
yes
Ebay.it price
309
355

I think for me it all boils down to the CHDK support...

As far as I know, nobody is working on those cameras..

If I get an SX10, I am sure I would start playing porting CHDK to it, and I really can't afford this for the next few months (I REALLY have a hard work period).

More thinking required.

thanks for your input...

If you like Sony, you could start a new project http://www.sony.net/Products/Linux/Download/category14.html#2 ;) DSC-H50 with full OS source could give CHDK a nice run for it's money (if you could figure out how to load your own code!)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Some info on non Canon tele-converters http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/
You will need a Canon adapter, step up/down ring (to suit) as well as the lens

Not related to the above but a technique I've found useful for scanning recent posts that have appeared since my last visit.
Bring up recent posts
step back page by page
scan just the the time on the top of each page
until time is older than previous visit
Then Read forward

Simple and obvious !

Or this, depending on you want (on the default theme, you can find the link fbonomi stated at the top of the page, and this one on the bottom, near the board stats):

What is wrong with the A570 IS?

I use an A720 IS for my CHDK-related stuff. Works fine. Forget long telephoto - I wish the thing was _wider._ I don't know what the fascination with all this supertelephoto stuff is, especially with the CA these extreme zooms show.
Canon P&S: 110HS, SX260HS, SX230HS, 2x A720 IS, 2x A590 IS
Canon DSLR: 5D Mark II, 300D IR-converted, 8x glass
MFT: DMC-GF1, DMC-G3, 7x glass
