Newbie needs help - A590 can't find CHDK

Hello, good people,
even though the instructions appear rather detailed, I couldn't get my Canon A590 IS to even find CHDK. ???

I have a 4gb card formatted like this:
Code: [Select]
root@doma:/var/log$ fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 4013 MB, 4013948928 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 488 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0007cf11

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *           1         488     3919828+   6  FAT16

I downloaded CHDK "a590-101b-0.9.3-688-full".

Putting the file vers.req on the card lets me see this
Quote
Firmware Ver GM1.01B
and this
Quote
Adj Ver.011.002

So I upload the file DISKBOOT.BIN and the whole CHDK directory as per instructions.
Code: [Select]
root@doma:/media/disk-1$ ls
CHDK  DISKBOOT.BIN  vers.req

I take out the card, write-protect it, and put it into the camera (this is where I start getting excited).

I make sure the camera is in the image-viewing mode. I turn the camera on and it says "No image. Card locked!". I go to through all the menus three times but can't find anything resembling "firm update". :-[

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

PS: I already tried some things like putting the card in without write-protection, formatting the FAT16 to only occupy 1.5GB and various random stuff. When the card isn't write protected, I can take pictures with the camera and it saves to the 4GB FAT16 without any problems. I am truely clueless as to where the problem could be.

Do i see a bootflag there? Thats wrong. The FAT16 boot-flag is not the same as the BOOTDISK string in the filesystem header. The latter one is a.. wait a sec, didnt i say the same thing already today? .. anyways, the latter one is a hack introduced by canon. Have a look here at how to set the BOOTDISK flag: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card#Linux:

You wont. The A590 is a DryOS camera, for which the "Firm update" way is not yet implemented (although there has been a major breakthrough today .. ), which means you need to use the autoboot method. That is, use a fat16 partition with the BOOTDISK flag (see above), and you need to lock the card to make the camera actually check for a diskboot.bin firmware file.

Hope that helps

The A590 does not use the firmware update method.

If your card is made bootable and locked, CHDK will start as soon as the camera is powered up (in picture taking mode, not in playback mode).
