"NO MEMORY" CARD PROBLEM g9

After using CHDK a couple of times with my Canon G9, I eventually got a message saying no "memory card". My camera could not read any memory card after that!!! I eventually unblocked the camera after inserting the 32mb sd card provided with the camera which has different connection points. This problem has happened one more time. I'm not sure if using CHDK could have caused it, I'm assuming though that maybe, inserting the card to often may have damaged the card reader. Has anyone else had a similar problem???

hi bigfoot, welcome to the forum !

I'm sitting here looking at a standard issue Canon 32 Mb SD, and a Kingston 8 Gb SDHC, and i can't see any
difference, contacts-wise.
Could you be more specific, i.e which types of cards work / do not work ?

wim

edit: also, some advice: the above applies in a way to everything you post on the forum:
the more specific you are, the faster you solve your problems  ;)

Hello whim,
I don't have the 32mb SD with me now, but I recall the contacts being flat and different to my Sandisk extreme III SD card. On the Sandisk, the contacts are 1mm inside the plastic indent, where as the standard 32mb canon one the contacts are exactly on the surface of the SD card and I think they are differently placed as well. It's hard to explain, I could send you a photo. The last time I had the problem occur, the canon card initially wouldn't go the whole way in the card reader which leads me to believe that it may be a mechanical problem with the reader. After a couple of attempts it went it in and then the camera worked properly once more. The funny thing is that it actually unblocks with the 32mb card which is the reason I haven't attempted to take it to a Canon service for repair. Let me know if you want me to send you a pick of the two different contacts...

I would say you're probably right, (one or more of) the card contacts must have gotten bent by
the card(s) causing the problem - try getting a peek into the SD slot (with the aid of a loupe + small flashlight maybe)
edit: and look out for anything loose, broken or dirty (just tried w/ LED flash without loupe on A590, worked, but w/ loupe or magnifier glass should be even better) afraid i can not be of much help there, don't even know what a g9 card slot looks like ...

Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it. I will try and take a peek, or else if it happens again I will take to a Canon service and get the verdict from there.

Regards
Bigfoot
