i want to use this firmware but im new to cameras (well not new) and never used this at all.

I want to buy this one.

But is it worth it? It didn't look like cdhk supports this model and i was wondering if someone could help me out.

There is quite a bit of work done on porting the sd790 http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2187.75.html

That suggests that it will probably be supported eventually, but as always there's no schedule and definitely no guarantee.
