Hi
I have just been reading these forums and Im confused.
Can I use CHDK with an 8gb card, or not?
If so, is the problem just that it cannot be bootable?

Please help - I want to use chdk with my 8gb card, but im totally confussed. Will it work, or do I have to loose 4gb?

You can use it with an 8 gig card. Either use the "firmware update" method to manually load it, or create two partitions. Both of these options are explained in the FAQ http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

thanks - I think I have found a workaround.

From reading these forums, it appears that creating a partition on an SDHC card (so as to have a bootable CHDK partition) renders difficult the browsing of the larger partition containing the photos. This is exclusively a Windows problem (Mac and Linux users do not have this problem).

Although various methods have been proposed (and these are fairly lengthy and need to be performed everytime you want to get your pics off your card) I think I have found the simplest workaround yet:

Would be interesting if it works, try it out ...

just remember: 1st partition must be FAT 12 or FAT 16, and second must be FAT32.

Canon cam file system knows only these two flavors ...

Besides, the first partition must be Canon bootable, which is not the same as Windows bootable.

Canon's idea of a bootable partition is: 1) must be FAT12 or 16 and 2) must have "BOOTDISK' written at offset

0x40 in the MBR (aka sector 0)

BTW CardTricks (link: see my sig) can write the 'BOOTDISK' for you (you will need to activate 'allow fixed disk',
or it will not accept a card treated with above program)

Hey can you explain what bit flipping is and why the link suggests it may be potentially dangerous?
Oh, and I found another workaround, but not so practical as it would need to be applied to every PC you sit at:
