Canon 40D tethered to Mobile Phone

Hi Folks,

I know you might laugh at this suggestion but I've been trying to find a wireless remote for my 40D to do some time lapse photography. Although I found DSLR Remote Pro great when I do remote shooting particularly for HDRs and Time Lapse, it's not really suitable in an outdoor environment. Now that I use moblie phone apps for calculating my exposures, DOF and panoramics, is it technically possible to control the shutter through a usb tether to a mobile phone using a specially written app. Feel free to ridicule this suggestion, but would be great to control the camera without a bulky laptop or having to manually release the shutter every ~2 seconds.

do yourself a favour and get this: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/product/accessories/tc-80n3.do
there are 3rd party remote controllers that can do the same as well, hint: search for phottix + remote (i will get a phottix one this week, i can report back if you want).
other than that, go check out this: http://panocamera.com/blog/?p=26 (Nintendo DS as remote)
a cellphone MIGHT be used, though these often lack a USB Hostmode, so i doubt it is possible - also this does not belong in this forum here :)

tested the phottix tr-80 today, works as advertised, see a review here (not by me :D).
you can do extensive timelapse with it, even with bracketing.

The review says :-

"things like exposure bracketing are possible with a bit of juggling."

What 'juggling' is required  ?

easy: set exposure bracketing on the camera. then activate timed shutter ON THE CAMERA (2 seconds for example) - without the remote the camera will now take three bracketed shots when you press the shutter once.

now using the remote, set the timer (when the first shot will be taken), like 1 minute. then set an interval, like 10 minutes (every 10 minutes the remote will press the shutter). then finally you set the exposure count, like 100 (100*3).

the final outcome will be 300 shots, taken in a timespan of 1000 minutes, each shot bracketed in 3 subshots, started one minute after pressing start on the remote.

the only bad thing about the remote is that it is a) very big (which can also be an advantage, because you can grip it firmly in your hand and you cannot lose it accidentially etc) and b) you can not switch it off (though the battery is _supposed_ to last 3 years)
