Can't get CHDK onto my card

I'm trying to get the CHDK firmware onto my SD card but everytime I try it I get a message saying the card is write protected. I tried this with the lock tab in both the on and off position, and I tried doing this both through the camera and using a card reader. I also tried to format it but it won't allow me to. I tried downloading the Card Tricks utility and I get the same message.

Anyone know how I can turn the write protection off?

try this: format it low level in your camera (normal Canon mode)
then unlock write protect and format in CardTricks ....
it should then happily accept CHDK (unless your card is kaput)

Nope, still not working. I was able to format in camera using the low level option like you said. Then I tried formating it using CardTricks with the tab in both positions but it still won't let me.

I can still take pictures with the card and transfer it to the computer both with the supplied software and by using the card reader to drag and drop. So the card is still working. I just can't copy anything onto it, or format through the computer. Just to add, I tried this with two different SD cards and they both don't work.

A friend of mine suggested trying a different card reader which I don't have access to at the moment. Do you think that would be worth a try? Is there anything else I can try at the moment?

Must be a large card then  :D... CT can't format cards > 4 Gb in FAT16, you need to partition them :

Wiki FAQ  Q11
Quote
The methods presented above require cards to be formatted using the FAT16 file system, which is limited to a maximum of 4 GB. Some cameras support the new SDHC (SD High Capacity) flash cards, which can go over 4 GB.

If you have a card larger than 4 GB, the solution is to create two partitions on your card: a small FAT16 partition, and a larger FAT32 partition. (The FAT16 partition can be very small, like 2 MB, and must be the first partition on the card.) You would then install the CHDK boot files (DISKBOOT.BIN and possibly PS.FIR) on the FAT16 partition, and everything else on the FAT32 one.

When using this system, CHDK will start from the FAT16 part of the card. It will then automatically detect the larger FAT32 partition, and "switch over" to use that one. All images, movies, etc. will be stored on the large partition, and all CHDK scripts and data files will be read from there. (The smaller partition cannot be accessed once CHDK is loaded, so don't put any scripts or other files you want to use on it!)

You can use the tool attached in this post: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,255.msg29154.html#msg29154 if you want to do this.

If you're trying to install on a supported cam you can start CHDK through the menu update method.

Still it should work ! You're not running Windows 9x by any chance, are you ?

No, it's only a 2Gb card. And I'm running XP.

I just tried the program in your post and it doesn't work either. It won't allow me to format, make the disk bootable or partition.

Mmmh... and is it a mini or micro SD card ? MMC card ? I've had some reports of those not working.

Is formatting under Explorer not working either (i mean right click on drive and choose format ?)

It's just a normal 2Gb card not mini or micro. And it's SD not MMC. One is by PNY and the other is ATP.

When I format using Explorer it says the same the, "the card is write protected".

Have you tried the 'standard issue' Canon card that came with your cam ? If it does work on that,
you managed to collect 2/2 incompatible cards - and should probable find another brand card, never
heard of ATP, but did hear complaints before about PNY

Still says write protected. I guess it really might just be the card reader I'm using.

that IS a possibility ... people here have hacked card readers to make them NOT report card lock, i guess the
little detector could also get stuck the other way round.
Try with a friend's reader or smth like that maybe ...
