ixus900ti / sd900 probability of a successful ccd replacement

hi people!
i have (succesfully) burned image sensor with a 300mw laser while taking a video of home lasershow... the reason is that i started to capture in direction of the light source, not the projection. hovewer i knew that i should not do this )))... the result is - 12 bad pixel areas, which is not so big of course, but still noticeable even on video(. so this is what makes me upset, to see them on all photos now.
at a local canon repair service, the replace cost for ccd+lens is somewhat 200$, so its better to buy a new camera instead.
but suddently i was lucky, and found a pretty cheap ccd only replacement for sd900 (!) on ebay for 30$, so it makes sense to try place it instead of old, burned...of cource, if it will come in decent shape without any damage.
so, how are you, people, can count probability of a success replacement? and, maybe someone has done this operation before, even on other models?
thanks for your answers :)

Sorry man, it's highly unlikely. As you've found out, they are disposable. The staff cost for repairing them, no matter what the actual problem is, costs more than the cost of the camera to produce. Even Canon considers them disposable. ("them" being the Elph PowerShot SD line.) This does not take into account Capitalism; a SD990 carries a price tag that makes you think it's certainly NOT disposable; nonetheless...

Your best bet is to find someone who's a veteran at SMT soldering and has his/her own gear like sub-millimeter iron, hot air rework station, reflow oven, high-magnification optics and bright lights, and the steady hands of a heart surgeon. That's not saying they can fix it, either. They just have a much higher probability of success than you do.

If it's under warranty, just send it to Canon and play dumb - "Hey, what's this spotty stuff in each of my photos?"

BTW: Got a permit and the proper signage to operate that Class 3B laser?  ::)

hehe ^^ i have dissassembled camera, replaced ccd unit, and it seems that all is ok and working!! :) now it can make the same photos as new ).
1 hour of dissassemble/figure-it-out/assemble ... im surprised with my repair skills :)))) ill post later some photos with 'burned' matrix, and replaced.

PS
canon repair center - suxx, they ask ~200$ (~300$ at exchange rate of december) for repair) lol.
i could answer to my previous question - yes, replace is possible, if parts availible.. camera has nice disign, and it is not so hard to replace modules from the same model) and thanks to the honest seller - ccd is fine.)

follow up.

so, here is the sky, so the damage is most clearly visible here .. and the 100mw blue i have.

clearsky-with-burned-ccd.jpg .. [2.91mb]
473unit-with-burned-ccd.jpg .. [3.25mb]

and with the new ccd!

first-testimage-with-new-ccd.jpg .. [3.49mb]
old-ccd-itself.jpg .. [3.27mb]

(links from my home server, so they can be unavailible from time to time. later i will upload them to different location and update post)

PS. however, i noticed one bad pixel on new ccd, but it is not a great problem as compare to old burned ccd )
i hope i can figure out how can i add this pixel to static remap list (help appreciated indeed :D) .. or just ignore it.

so, does this mean it is possible to mix and match lens assemblies?
interesting. it looks like it comes as whole assembly (lens and ccd).

Canon 50mm f/1.8
Sigma 24mm f/1.8

the ccd replacement i received was really the lens+ccd assemble, but the lens driving mechanism was totally messed up (i guess, 'donor' was dropped by user). so i take the lens part from my assembly and ccd part from replacement assembly - and you can see the result ) however i still didn't resolved a 'bad pixel' issue .. maybe im even 'lucky' to have only one, not more .. just in case, remap list is different for every camera and many ccd's have got at least one bad pixed which, i guess, is fixed in production processes... so, to the end user a 'new' camera looks like 'without bad pixels'. i wonder, if there a possibility to change this remap list via chdk core .. maybe someone know how can i do it..?
