chdk doesn't improve image quality directly (there is no way to improve sensor quality by software),
but it gives you more options (like 65 sec exposure time, bracketing, and raw shot for better post processing)
but there are some techniques to improve quality a little bit

Yeah, that's what I was expecting to find, some suggestions on that.

Mmmmmmm, it's difficult to write after Barney.

But...hummm, get a tripod!
The lightest you can find, as the weight of your IXUS is minimum.
I have a Manfrotto 785B, the cheapest Manfrotto option, 50 euros. It is not very sturdy but it does well with my heavy S3 with lens converter and filter. It's 43.5cm long and fits INSIDE my small backpack.
You know what they say: A weak tripod on the field is better than the sturdy one you leave at home.

i got one of those cheap tripods, but in my case, the s3is (even without converter lens) is way too heavy for it, so the camera isnt horizontally aligned anymore. so i have to either balance it out by myself or just dont use it anymore. i have a huge tripod, and yes, dont take it with me all the time because its so huge. damn.
