I worked around the issue for myself this morning by patching kbd.c and main.c to run a little "1 sec pause, half-shoot press" script whenever there is no autostart script set up.  Wish I didn't have to do the 1 sec pause, but shorter times seem to be less reliable.

A somewhat better move was to check whether the playback button is being held down before launching the pause, half-shoot script.  This way I can hold down the playback button and not have the lens extend.
