just crazy idea.

nobody tried to use MD to get overall luminosity to automatically adjust shutter speed override?

MD setup:
set delay interval to 2-3 secs
timeout=delay_interval+1
threshold=255 (so it will not trigger )
cols=1
rows=1

md_get_cell_diff 1, 1, overall_luminocity

shutter_override_time = some_formulae ( overall_luminocity )

I don't have camera nearby to test it

I have thought about timelapse movie script which would automatically override shutter speed at night
I'm planning to make 2 days timelapse movie ( it seems 8gb SD card and power adapter will help also :-) )

NOTE: when MD stops working on timeout, cells containg absolute values instead difference.
I dont remember if I mentioned this earlier

A good idea though. There's no auto-exposure methods available otherwise to find out what long shutter speeds to use.
Why couldn't the APEX luminance value be used for this? This can be calculated from get_bv96 can't it? I'm still trying to understand these functions, but wouldn't they give a better result?

Edit: It's ok. I realize why it's no use now.

sorry to go back a few pages on the topic, but i was doing that lighter photography too; it was the first thing i tried when i heard about the shutter speed overrides.
one of the better ones:

(a620 using original alfa fingalo build)
this stuff is DEFINITELY good times.

Well, I'm that kind of kid  :haha, and it definitly doesn't explode if it isn't mixed up with air/oxygen.
But with your method it is.
For saving power and getting it faster you kan youse a 25% KOH dilution.
But, it is very dark, so you won't get anything but a dark pic. (flashing is no use either. :haha)
And if you fill the balloon too much it explodes.

(If you want it to explode use 1:2 ratio.)

wow, i just can't stop doing these.
my wife looks at me a little strangely now, every time i bust out a lighter.
2-part post since i just now realized how to do attachments and the limit is 4.
all of these are completely un-retouched.  the only edits are cropping or simply downrezzing the image.
using allbest 34 on my a620.
[edit]
can't seem to get these attachment things to cooperate.   ???

one more, and quite possibly my favorite shot i've ever taken.
i'd do anything to have taken this one just a hair more focused.
this never would have been possible without the chdk.
[edit]
attachment difficulties, sorry!
