Help: SD800 IS: shooting interval with AFL and display off?

my problem: i would like to shoot intervals with auto-focus locked and display off, but it seems not possible with the sd800is. when using just the canon firmware the AFL (activated by pressing half-shutter and left) gets deactivated when turning the display off (trying to turn the display off and then activating the AFL does not work either...). so i am wondering if there is a way around this problem - so far my tinkering with the scripts (i am complete newbie) - trying to incorporate into an interval script  "click shoot" instead of "shoot" or  "click display" and "press shoot_half     click left" - did not bring in the desired results (the problem with "click shoot" is that it still tries to focus, and the problem with trying to replicate the button-pushing to active AFL and turn the display off is probably due to the fact that while in alt-mode to run the script those buttons just don't function that way).  is this a limitation i have to live with, or are there hacks around it? Thanks!

what are you trying to accomplish? why are you trying to keep the display off?

well, i am shooting open ended intervals (a shot every ten seconds), and the camera lasts about couple hours. turning the display off should allow for longer shooting time (no external power supply possible).
