S5is 1.01b E18 noobyness, unnable to install

I'm trying to install a CHDK system on a S5is with a 1.01b E18 firmware.
I used the camera to format a 4GB ssd and made it bootable as per linux instructions.
I didn't make the MISC and DCIM folders as it should do so itself.
I put DISKBOOT.BIN in the root of the ssd(tried to rename to DISKBOOT.bin but refuses).
If I start with the camera with the card locked the camera just gives me a card locked error with the regular firmware ... otherwise it just ignores it.

I successfully managed to upgrade an A620, but the S5is camera is driving me nuts ...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is the card formatted FAT16 ? The default for a 4 gig card would be FAT32

I had the camera do the format and it only sees it as a 3.8 GB so I think it's fat16, but I didn't check ...

AND OBVIOUSLY I WAS WRONG!

Ok, checked with parted it was fat32 re-formated to fat16, flicked switch to lock and "Hey, Presto!" CHDK!

Thanks for pulling the blinkers of my eyes!

Hopefully now I'll be able to do some motion capture photography(Lightning and such) without too much hand holding.
