Try a recovery tool like Zero Assumption Recovery (http://www.z-a-recovery.com/ - image recovery part is free). Worked for me in a similar situation. It runs under Windows.

thanks for your fast reply zeno!

it did it's job and i was able to recover most of the pictures :)

anyway: i'm still puzzled why something like that happened in the first place. is it a known "bug" with FAT16 formatted 4gb sdhc cards? maybe because of the custom 64k clusters or something? would i be better of with using 2gb cards?

i just want to avoid something like this to happen again in the future.

once again, ANY advice is appreciated!

did you use the chdk file explorer to move/delete stuff before this happened?

Calypso - I was using 4GB cards too, and mainly use OSX. I have found that using OSX to delete images does occasionally seem to result in some sort of damage to the card file system. Windows seems to do a more reliable job.

nope, i've not been using the file explorer in any way to move anything around

@zeno:
well, now THATS interesting news :O. i'm gonna keep an eye on that. because i have been deleting images only with OSX.
anyway, i low-level formatted the card in windows now, and set CHDK up again fresh from the start. i took a ton of pics afterwards to "test" and so far everything is working fine. guess i'm just gonna import the pix with iPhoto and delete em in windows.

Calypso: what chdh version are you using? The beta one? Or is there another version for ixus 85 is?
