I had to do this to the wife's camera and it worked fine. You might want to be a little cautious if the camera is still under warranty. CHDK itself is transparent since it is only in memory temporarily while the camera is on. However, what you need to do is permanently change the camera's firmware. Personally, I think it's worth it and it does work if you follow the directions. The other option requires you to dump your camera's firmware and compile the new code yourself (unless you can find a good Samaritan to do it for you}.
