EOS 500D officially announced with video

It has 1080p 20fps, 720p 30 fps, and VGA 640x480 30fps.

It is a Digic IV processor, being a film student and only owning a 30D, I am thinking of grabbing one as soon as it comes out (the 5D Mk II being out of my budget).

What's the current compatability of CHDK with Digic IV?

I would like to help out with video related modifications for this camera when it comes out, such as variable frame rate, possibly unlocking 30 fps for 1080p, and possibly exceeding 30 fps for 720p.

The only other camera I have I could help out with is the 30D.

i posted a thread about this in the general section too lol.

it looks neat. i will be purchasing it in may, i am looking forward to it.
only thing thats got me bummed is i heard its going to have a mono built in mic and a mono speaker on the back.

idk if you'll be able to put an aftermarket external stereo mic on it, but whats HD without stereo sound? :-s

has anybody got a simillary weird idea after reading what 500D can do - is there a way to hack its firmware so that 450D could record video (without the computer!)?  :o

If someone would be able to do that my camera would become great - instead of being just good.  :P

this is not possible, the 500d will have a completely different sensor compared to the 450d. the 500d has the same sensor as the 50d, but i do think it may be possible now to engineer video on the 50d, seeing as how it'll be possible with the same sensor in a different body. hmm.

OK, how about just hoping on a moddified 450D FirmWare that would allowe recording on a 450d?

lol, i guess anythings possible. dataghost unlocked recording on a 40d but i guess he won't release it, maybe he knows how to do it

heres the first released hands on review of it (i think its the first), looks neat. menu system looks a lot like the 50d.

I just ebayed a 500d/t1i for $775(could be used *cringe*) for my first dslr, i'm no photographer, but I love learning the technicalities of everything,  I've heard of CHDK, and i'm always very excited whenever there's some kind of custom firmware for any device going on...  I'd agree with Athiril about having a higher fps for video recording modes, maybe even custom resolution custom fps (im quite noob at this so not sure how possible that could be). I heard in a review that 1080p 20fps is due to a bandwidth limitation of the sensor, though even so then technically vga video could do 60 fps or more

Frankly, I'm more interested in more basic stuff. Like ability to manually set frame rate and lock auto ISO without have to trick the lens and manually lock the iso each time I record.

The T1i 500D is already my favorite camera I've ever owned.

Now that I have it in hand and have tried out the HD video feature, I do agree that having manual control over shutter speed, ISO, aperature, and fps would be nice

Idk what shutter speed is going to do for you wtih video, but controlling the aperture and iso would allow you to manually set how dark or ilght the video is.

I've had the camera since may and Love it! Just got a grip for it, and rented a Canon 16-35 f/2.8L lens. I'll never look back to another p&s, chdk was a great mod though when I had my p&s!
