SX 10 - RAW not working

Hi All,

I'm a new user with a SX 10IS - I've managed to load CHDK and get into the menu fine, but I don't seem to be able to get RAW files to save to the SD card.

I've gone into the RAW menu and enabled both "Save RAW" and "RAW file in dir with JPEG", so I'd now expect that there would be a RAW file in the same location as the next picture I take, however this is not the case.

What I do find odd is that I need to follow the procedure of Menu > Firm Update > OK ... every time I power up the camera, so I suspect that what's happening is that CHDK is not loading when I switch to the mode that allows me to take pictures.

I'm obviously missing something here ... can someone help a clueless newbie :) ?

Thanks
Warrick

Hello & welcome, WarrickF !

When the RAW mode is enabled in CHDK, you'll see the remaining space for RAW files on the OSD - RAW: XXX

When you start CHDK the manual way (with the "Firmware Update" menu item from the Canon menu), it ist active until you power off the camera.

You should read the CHDK FAQ, there you'll find more informations, also how to start CHDK automatically...

--> To work with the SX10 RAW files you should enable the DNG support: How to enable DNG on the SX10...

BTW, for SX10 "native" RAW extension is .CR2 (not .CRW).
CR2 files are visible via USB (in Windows explorer); in playback mode they (coupled with JPEG) also marked as <RAW> by camera software.

Ah, I see - thanks, I managed to get it all working. The only thing I'm not clear on is the role that the write protection switch on the SD card plays. Why is it necessary to leave the flipped?

We use (or better abuse) the Canon firmware update mechanism to load the CHDK code:
When the camera is powered on, the original Canon firmware checks whether the card
  1) is locked,
  2) has a special bootable flag at offset 40h on the first sector and
  3) has special files stored in the root directory

With an unlocked card the camera do not load the needed files (diskboot.bin), it just starts "as normal"...
This mechanism is designed by Canon, it's not a CHDK thing...

Edit: typos...
