...interesting (but cumbersome) stuff:

I experience recently some issues with Diskboot.bin load method too on my SX1....

a) Formated my (until now) working 1GB SD Card (UltraII) manually or with CardTricks 1.44
b) put on the Diskboot.bin + CHDK

Now most of the time after a fresh "install" CHDK will be invoked correctly. BUT

I shut down the Cam and leave the Cam for a couple of minutes aside:

On re-powering the Cam, CHDK is not starting anymore (for no obivous reason)!
SX1 just enters "normal" operation.
-> Switching On/Off (Play or Rec) does not start CHDK.
-> Ejecting/Re-Inserting SD Card (it is write protected!) also no start of CHDK.

It seems that CHDK is "lost".

And suddenly (but not trackable for me right now) it will work again! then it looks that it is fine (CHDK starting on repeated On-Off Sequence) but as said: After a couple of minutes off, it is again not working... A fresh "copy" will help, but started also to get less reliable...

I start to get deeply worried...

EDIT: ...well, it seems that I opened/closed/ejectd/inserted already to many times a SD Card on my Cam....(without Diskboot.bin) I saw that my SX1 will often not recognize that the "Lock" is set on the SD Card (--> So despite of Lock is set, the card will be writable and no message of "card is write protected"....and that is naturally needed to start CHDK....

EDIT 2: Issue solved (see below)

The camera starts normally when CHDK doesn't ?

Does it say card locked if this happens ?

Don't forget what the H stands for.

Played around with diff settings and here's how my cam behaves, yes fboesch I couldn't stay away and got a Sx1 aswell. :)

No overrides.

Auto mode has no  Cont-AF.

P, Tv, Av and M mode including the rest(SCN/sport etc) crashes cam when trying to take Cont-AF, but it won't crash if you just take 1 picture and release the shutter right after. So with a little agility and timing you can shoot a series, just keep releasing and repressing it and it will work.

Not sure if this helps but I thought I'd report it anyways.

Yes, Cam starts normally. And as just "edited" ...it seems to me to be an internal "mechanical" issue, that the "Check if SD Card is locked" checker is not working correctly anymore within my Cam....

That's exactly what I was thinking. See http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,3374.0.html

THIS WAS IT!  ...followed (very carefully) the tip of the SX10guy and managed to lever the small "Lock-Checker" within my SX1....actually this was also the reason why my 16GB SDHC Card did rarely work (despite of MultiPartitioning) to start CHDK: The Locker-Switch on this card is smaller than the one from my 1GB SD Card!

Thanky reyalp! You made my day! :-D

:lol That is so funny and wonderful at the same time! To do such DIY micromechanical repair, and succesfully! :)

Yeah! ...and it is very, ...VERY "micro" in there! So the instructions are not for every one...chances are high, that this lever will be bended in a way, that the cam will be a service/repaircase...I'm just lucky, that one of my other hobbies is build&fly "Micro-RC-Helicopters" so I'm used to do some "micro-machinery" stuff...and lucky that this fixed my booting problem from my 16GB Card!

Excellent! Reading your results, helps to point out following:

1) The Capturing Sequence (part of the code in capt_seq.c file, with base from the SX10) is not yet complete for the SX1. ON "single" shot yes, but it seems, that the Cam - if using Cont-AF will jump "somewhere" else and not return to the "modified CHDK" routine, which will let the Cam Crash.

(Btw: I ask myself, if Cont-AF is working correctly on the SX10 then...)

--> so I've added it to (my) ToDo list: Track the Capture Sequence. Find in Dump of Firmware 2.00 the corresponding routines and "move" them to CHDK Porting Code, so that the "loop" of Cont-AF is processed correctly (mainly the "call-return" through CHDK).

Thanks MRQ!

Continuous AF is working correctly with CHDK on the SX10 (including things like bracketing during continuous AF.
