Hello,

i've got two suggestions, which i think will be possible and not too complicated.
  • "Choose the timing of the flashlight." or Rear/2nd Curtain Sync
    My old Canon Powershot S45 would allow the user to choose if the flashlight is flashing at the beginning of the exposure or at the end. So with long exposure-times you get the right effect. My new powershot only flashes at the beginning of the exposure. But in my oppinion it makes more sense to flash at the end of the exposure... so you see the motion in the right direction

    -- i saw this in the poll already... so someone already suggested it.. but i would really appreciate it if someone implement this.

  • Light during filming
    Would it be possible if you could choose the AF-Helplight (or AF-assist Beam) to stay on while filming? So when you make a movie in a darkish area you have at least a little bit light?

Since i don't know what camera model you own now, i'll try to give some hints...

to 1)
Some Powershots have 1st/2nd curtain settings; if your model do not have this, maybe the "Slow Sync" option could help a bit.
AFAIK there's no option in CHDK ATM to control this behaviour; maybe it could be done with a script (for long exposures)...

to 2)
Possible, but maybe model dependent, e.g. on the SX10 it can be done with a little script that's started while video recording is active...

you still didnt provide the info about your camera...
have you checked your manual? there are only 2 cameras that do not have the rear curtain flash (at least those that we know of, like fe50 already said). it can be added to more cameras easily.

I have the SX110, wich is not really ported, yet.
There is some kind of "alpha"-version of the CHDK (there is a rear-curtain-flash feature in the menu, but it is not working, yet).

anyhow.. i checked the manual of my camera, there is no rear curtain flash option implemented.

i guess i just wait, till there is a final version of the SX110 CHDK

Yes, but there's the "Slow Synchro", Canon SX110 manual page 95

Use the set_led command, with 1st param = 9 (for the LED_AF_BEAM) and 2nd param = 1 (for ON), 3rd param is optional (brightness, not on all cameras)...

   set_led (9,1)

in a Lua script enables the AF lamp...
When you start video recording the LED will be disabled, so start your script while video recording & you'll see your light beam  ;)

The "rear-curtain-flash feature" in CHDK is done by manipulation of the

   PROPCASE_FLASH_SYNC_CURTAIN

PropertyCase, it's #20 in propset1 / #64 in propset2 (see LUA_Reference#get_prop and MoreBest#get_propset for more informations / how to use it...)

i know about the "slow synchro" but it hasn't the same effect like a rear curtain flash.

and thank you for the scripting command for the assist-beam and the propcase for the rear curtain flash. I'll try it during this week.
