...but the "Create card with two partitions" step doesn't seem to work as it should. After I've finished this step and put the back the sd card in my card reader, I only get an system message that the card is not formatted.
This CHDK menu item just writes the partition table to the card, you have to format the partitions manually, there's no format feature yet implemented in CHDK.

I thought maybe it was because of my windows 7 (64 bit) didn't support reading fat16 cards
No; all Windows version support reading (and also writing) FAT12 & FAT16.

The first thing i wondered about was if i was supposed to get a confirm message after the "Create card with two partitions" step was completed? I'm not referring to the warning dialog about erasing content (I confirmed yes on this step), but after this I get no visual response that the partition process was done. Is this correct beaviour?
Yes, directly after confirming the dialog the partition scheme is written to the card, no response/feedback.
...to save some bytes of the very rare camera RAM ;)

Ok, thanks for commenting. I'm not sure, but it didn't seem like I was able to format the SD card correctly from my PC after the initial creation of partition table done with CHDK on my A590 camera. But I managed to do the partition/formatting process with the SDM installer from my PC instead (following most of the steps in this post), so I'm now a happy CHDK user :)

Ok, thanks for confirming what I thought. Feel free to check out my patch for automatically formatting boot part in FAT12 - it worked perfectly when I tried it, and is a first step towards automatic setup of CHDK on cams that support "Create card with two partitions". The link to the diff should still work. But, if really trying to really save RAM maybe this is of no interest?
Do it 'til it Hz

Nah, I think it's of no one having the time to look into it the first time you posted it. It's definitely a good idea.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

As a relative newcomer I found this thread extremely helpful!  I originally read the various instructions on how to set up CHDK and was able to do it on my A650IS, so now have DNG capability.

From my first reading I misunderstood the issues with cards greater than 4GB, so bought a fast 8GB card, only to discover the issues.  I finally found this thread which had the right/decent instructions -thanks!  I now have 2 x 4GB FAT16 partitions and can swap between them ON MY PC.  I have tried loading SMD's setup for my camera as well as the latest build, but neither has the "swap partition" feature in any menu that I can find.  Is mine one of the "not supported" cameras for this feature?  I've even tried looking through the published source to see if there is some indication there... (I'm a 'casual' programmer).

thanks for your help and all the work on CHDK!

Mark

Hello Mark and welcome.

Not sure what you mean by 'loading SMD's setup' but have you tried using SDM's sdminst.exe to create a dual partition card ?

DISKBOOT.BIN goes on the first partition, the other files on the second partition.

After doing that, remember to swap back to the first partition.
