2. stable version 1.2: http://mighty-hoernsche.de/ or developer version 1.3 http://mighty-hoernsche.de/trunk/
CHDK version 1.3 is ready for the release. In my opinion it is the better choice.

I tried going to the new user guide and all I get is cloud storage advertisement
I do not want to install junkware or malware as I just finished battling with optimiser pro and mypcbackup

Unfortunately, there are many "user guides" for CHDK and most of them are old and obsolete. Please post the link(s) you were trying to follow and I'll see what I can do.
