New to this-- SD1100IS

Hi there. I'm sorry for the newbie post, but I've been trying to follow through the directions on the FAQs and I've gotten stuck. (Just so you know, I have a Mac, but I haven't gotten to the point yet where that is relevant). I have a Powershot SD 1100 IS. I found my camera's firmware number, which seems to be E18. Now I'm trying to figure out what to download. I read the FAQs and it indicated that the best thing to start with for a newcomer would be the AllBest build, and it has a link to the downloads page. But when I go there, all I can find is a list of autobuilds, which it says might not be stable. There's nothing about AllBest.

All I really want to do is bracketing multiple exposures for HDR...

If someone can help me out I'd appreciate it, thanks.

I use the chdk on my SX230 and SD1100 cameras, and I installed them using a Macbook, currently running 10.6.8.

I have a Mac
There's the Mac FAQ.

That's an error number. Read some more. (In fact, pretty much everything needed should be in the Mac FAQ.)

There hasn't been a "stable" release for quite a while now. Use the autobuilds.

You could use CHDK's Tv bracketing with a script or your cam's custom timer.

Thanks, but I've already been looking at the Mac FAQ before posting. I haven't gotten to the point of trying any of the stuff from it yet because I'm still trying to figure out which build to download, which seems to be addressed by the main FAQ.

I looked at my firmware again and you're right, I looked at the wrong line. I think the relevant number is 01A.

The main FAQ also specifically says to start with AllBest and not the autobuilds-- is that not available anymore? If not someone should change the FAQ, because it says its a bad idea to start with the autobuilds unless you know what you're doing.

I think (hope) that once I figure out what exactly to download, I should be able to run the script to install it on my card and figure it out. But there seems to be different info around about which builds to download, and I want to make sure I start with the right (easy) one.

Thanks for your help.

Firmware Ver GM1. 01A
Much better.

E18 indicates an error, or is it just something else irrelevant?
Google knows.

Once you know you should download an autobuild, you know what you're doing. ;)
But seriously, anyone can improve the wiki. Could it be you?

The autobuild is the "basic" build.

Maybe I'll improve the wiki someday, but I'm not about to edit it when I haven't even installed anything!

So just to clarify, I should download the autobuild from that autobuild list that corresponds to A01 for my camera model? Its late here so at this point I think I'll try it another day :-)

Re: E18, it showed up when I tried to view the firmware number. It was the line under the firmware number. So it didn't really come up as an error message. Google says it refers to the zoom lens not working, but my zoom is working fine and I haven't gotten any errors while using the camera.

Hi CanonBlue,
your firmware version surely is not A01, it must be something like 1.00C, 1.01A or 1.01B (these are the fw version supported by CHDK); on the firmware info screen the fw version is shown with a leading GM, e.g. "GM1.01A"...

So check again your correct firmware version, then download the "complete" package with exactly this number (e.g. "ixus80_sd1100-101a-0.9.8-755-full.zip") from the CHDK Autobuild Server.

The error codes are stored in the cameras flash ROM like a historical log.
Your E18 means: there at least once - maybe months ago - was such a zoom/lens mechanics problem.
E.g. this happens when the camera is powered on in a case/pocket...

In the line next to this error number you'll see the date when the error event has occurred; while the camera works ok, the E18 is nothing to worry about...

Does .01A fit? I think I made a slight typo when I edited my message above. I'm not used to these numbers and I reversed them :-) But I just checked my photo again and it says GM1.01A

Yes, indeed, so your fw is 1.01A - just download the correct package & have fun with CHDK !

I notice that the last instructions after running the installation script are "eject and lock card." What does lock card mean? Does it mean sliding that little thingie on the card? Wouldn't that mean you couldn't save photos to it anymore?

Edit: I tried it anyway and it erased my card and then said it couldn't install the CHDK because the card was locked. I guess I don't know what locked and unlocked mean?

Yes.

No.
The SD card write protection mechanism is done in software, CHDK overrides this; certainly the camera can access the card !
