Well, I can think of a couple reasons to leave the camera on normal mode most of the time. I use my camera for snapshots 90% of the time, so I don't need the fancy features for most things. I don't like the delay on startup, because sometimes I want to turn my camera on very quickly to catch something, for example an animal. And if I hand my camera to someone else at a party to take a photo of a group, I don't want them confused by all the extra stuff that comes up when you turn it on. It seems easier to leave it in the normal mode that I'll use most, and then turn on the CHDK when I want to do something like bracketing exposures (which so far is the only thing I know how to do with it anyway, and was the whole reason I wanted it).

I tried to do this. In Alt mode, I hit function and unchecked the box that said "save parameters." I'm not sure if it worked though. I tested and for example, if I change the exposure bracketing and then turn it off and on again, it does not save that option. But if I select a script and turn the camera off, then when I turn it on again and hit the Alt button, that same script name appears in the bottom left corner. So it seems like it is saving that. (Also I am having trouble exiting a script once I choose it, but I imagine I"ll be able to figure that out by messing around with it more.)

So was unchecking save parameters the thing you were referring to, or is there a different way to make it clear all values on startup?

Ok, after messing around for several minutes and checking the quick start user guide, I admit to defeat and stupidity-- once I've chosen a script, how do I make it go away? I can make different scripts run (although none of the ones that came with it seem to do anything interesting so maybe I'm not doing them right*) but I can't figure out how to get out of scripts completely and back to just using the different photo options. It now says "default script" in the bottom left (on alt mode) and pressing the shutter doesn't do anything, so I can't take pictures.

*Edit: I downloaded the intervalometer script and it works, and its really cool. But I tried the bracketing script from http://tools.assembla.com/chdk/browser/branches/grand/script and it doesn't seem to do anything. And I still can't seem to escape from scripts all together, which is the most important.

(Also, I'm sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to make a link. The box above that gives me the url code doesn't seem to have an option for making a shortcut to a link rather than the whole url.)

You don't need to make a script go away. When you press the shutter in <alt> mode, it runs the currently selected script. If you haven't selected a script, it just runs the default one, which is hard coded to print some stuff on the screen.

If you want to go back to the the default script (the only reason is to free up memory used by a large script, or prevent yourself from inadvertently triggering one that actually does something), there should be a default.bas in the CHDK script directory.

If you want to shoot normally, just leave alt mode.

Ok, thanks. I guess I was thinking I should be taking normal photos in Alt mode, but now I realise I should just choose the settings in Alt mode and then take pictures in normal mode.

Yeah, I think that is clearer, good idea.

I just wanted to report that I've been using the CHDK for a few days now and it seems to be working well. I haven't done anything too complicated, mainly only exposure bracketing, but I'm getting used to how it works. I want to try a motion detection script (I saw some cool photos of lightening taken that way) but I'm confused because a lot of the scripts say that you need Figaro's build and I'm not sure what that is.

Anyway I like it enough that I'm going to try to install it on my 8 gig card too :-)

I tried to install the CHDK on my 8 gig card, following the directions on the Mac FAQ. It says to partition it with a small partition first and then a larger one. I did all that, and the CHDK did autoboot, but it only gives me access to the small partition, so after one photo it said the memory card was full. The page for the SD1100 camera does say that autoboot is not supported, but it should work with the firmware update method; however whether I put it on locked or unlocked it still said the card was full after one photo.

I also noticed that the page for the SD1100 says that multipartition is not supported; but in the Mac FAQ it says that if your card is more than 4 gigs you have to do a partition. So I'm confused about that.

Given that it works on my 4 gig card it isn't the end of the world if I can't get it to work on the 8 gig card too, but does anyone know how to make it work?

I just wanted to report back that using the Terminal commands at the end of the Mac FAQ to remove the flags DID work successfully. I now have the Firm Update menu. So if anyone else is having trouble with this on a mac, then try that.
