I have successfully installed the CHDK on my 4 gig card (using the manual installation method on the Mac FAQ).

I also have an 8 gig card that I'd like to use, but I'm not sure if its possible to use the CHDK on it. On the page for the SD1100, it says that multipartition and large memory card support is still pending, and autoboot won't work. But then it says that you can still use it with the firmware update method. So I tried following the directions on the mac FAQ for a card greater than 4 gigs, and it sort of worked, except that it wouldn't give me access to the larger partition. So it seems like I can do it but only if I'm willing to reduce the card to less than 4 gigs (so as to use FAT16) and only use that partition, which is a big waste of card space.

Does anyone know if its possible and how to do it properly? Thanks!

So no one knows? I was hoping someone could give me an answer one way or the other, because if I can't install it on my 8 gig card I'm going to buy another 4 gig card (or a couple).

Looking at the CHDK code, multipartitions for the ixus80 are not yet supported.

Ok, so it probably just doesn't work...

The reason I'm confused is that on the page for my camera it says this: "The SD1100IS do not have multipartition support, the autostart method is only supported up to 4GB cards;
starting CHDK with the "Firmware Update" menu item works also with cards > 4GB "

It seems like the first sentence says it won't work, but the second sentence says it will work, only with manual boot. To add to the confusion, I can't get manual boot to work on my 4 gig card even though autostart works fine.

Anyway, it looks like I should just buy another 4 gig card. I'm going to be traveling soon and I won't be able to dump my card, so I want to make sure I don't run out of space to try things like exposure bracketing.

The multipartition support is needed only for autoboot with a partition that is >4GB. The manual boot/firmware update method should always work, as should the autoboot if you don't have a big partition. So the "Firmware Update" is the same as manual boot but not the same as autoboot/autostart.

What is the problem with the manual boot? Does it give an error, does the screen go black or ...?

If you can't get it to work in time, you might be able to make two 4GB partitions and kiss up to someone and ask them to build a special version that does include the "swap partitions" option.  I haven't tried this, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. On the other hand, I also don't see a reason why the manual boot doesn't work. ;)

Well, on my 4 gig card, there simply isn't a Firm Update option in the menu. I've made sure all the files were copied and everything, and I've looked through all the menus, so I'm at a loss. It autoboots and works just fine, but there is no way to use the manual boot option.

On the 8 gig card, I'm not sure how I'm even supposed to set it up so that the Firmware Update option would work. The instructions I followed for the 4 gig card involve a FAT16 format, which only works on cards up to 4 gigs (I tried it and it made a 4 gig partition on my card and the camera couldn't access the other 4 gigs). The only other instructions I found were the ones for making two partitions, which didn't work (as expected for this camera). So I don't know how exactly to try to get the manual boot method to work on an 8 gig card, which is why I was wondering if its even possible.

For the "Firmware Update" to appear you need to have a PS.FI2 file in your root (your camera's wiki does not mention this for some reason). If you have that, I'd expect that starting in playback/review mode (if possible, as I don't see a button for it on the wiki images; it should be the same way as get the firmware version with ver.req) and opening the menu should be enough. It might be that it is an item at the bottom of the list and you'll have to scroll down to see it. (Just saying. When I first got my camera I didn't notice you could scroll down beyond the visible items. ;))

This method is the same for any size partition, by the way: PS.FI2 in the root and start in playback/review mode.

The build that I downloaded did include a PS.FI2 file, and I did copy that. I guess its possible something is wrong with it-- I didn't modify it at all, I just copied it onto my camera when the instructions said to. Since I have a mac, I followed the installation instructions at http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#SD_Card_.E2.89.A44GB and they do say to copy that file along with copying the rest of the CHDK folder.

For the 4 gig card, I've tried all possible combinations of starting in play/shoot mode with the card locked/unlocked and scrolling through all menus. The Firm Update option just isn't there. There was another thread before  (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,3534.msg33119.html#msg33119) where I asked about this and eventually I just gave up and said I'd use the autoboot method, which I'm happy with now.

But, I still would like to figure out how to use the 8 gig card.

Again I was following the Mac FAQ, and the applescript on that page didn't work for me, so I had to do the manual installation. It involves using Terminal code to modify the boot sector of the card, and since I don't really know what I'm doing with Terminal code, I  just followed the directions to the letter. They worked for my 4 gig card but they don't work for a larger card and I don't know how to modify them.

EDIT: Ok, I don't know what to do with this message board code. When I first pasted in the urls with the standard BBC bracket code, they didn't work. Then when I just copied and pasted the urls by themselves, they made links with the title of the target page (although they did not let me choose the text of the link). That seemed to work fine. But then when I fixed the quote code at the bottom, they went back to just showing urls! I don't understand how that could have affected lines in the message above it. So I'm sorry for the messy links.

You need to understand the instructions to correctly create a multi-partition card. Blindly attempting to follow them without understanding could result in the loss of all data on your mac.

Ok, but when you say nothing special, what do you do? Like I said, the "nothing special" method that I used at first only works on 4 gig cards. I don't know what the default is for larger cards.

I understand how creating partitions works and stuff, and its easy in disk utility to make sure you are only modifying the SD card and not any other drive. But I don't know much about the Terminal code. The code given worked just fine, and I think its unrealistic to expect anyone who wants to try the CHDK to know how to program in linux or unix or whatever that is.

I did read the known issues on that FAQ but I don't think any of them apply to me. Since the installation worked on my 4 gig card, I don't think there are any problems with unarchiving or permissions.
