Good to check before you buy a used camera ;)

Anyody can point me to the right place to start?
I have no problem playing a bit with C and trying various addresses but I do not know how to get the right environment  (source files, compilers etc).
I could try the blinker method, but for that I need to play with addresses and be able to compile some code...

I could not find the link in the thread you mention for SX200 IS.

Sure that was me! But I was not sure as to which one was the "new udumper" mentioned by charlesrg.

Anyway, I did confirm that the cam responds to .fir or .fi2 files by showing firmware update menu.
Is there a "safe" way to use this to get a firmware dump? I am really worried that I could just end up with a brick by trying firware update...

An FIR or FI2 is just a program that the camera loads. If it doesn't have code to write to internal flash, the risk of bricking your camera is very low indeed (but CHDK comes with NO WARRANTY, and no one can promise you that anything related to CHDK is 100% safe. See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._Can_CHDK_damage_your_camera_.3F )

That said, if you didn't figure the above out for yourself, it's very unlikely you can do anything useful with an FI2 file.

OK I was more or less expecting this type of answer based on what I have seen on this forum before...

That's quite a pity as forums have been a great help to me as a newbie on RC stuff a few years ago and I am now very happy to help newbies now when I can.

I will take it as chdk can only be done as an heavy time investment project and I have not devoted the right amount of time so far.
Might just go back to the old hardware way for the time being since the first feature I am interested in is remote.

vpersiani, reyalp is extremely helpful to new people in the forum.  That said the wiki answers a lot of questions that are asked here by new people.

This was not intended as a flame, although you'd be correct to infer certain amount of frustration.

If you are unable to understand what is required from the information that has already been provided to you, or are unwilling to invest the time required to do so, it is very unlikely that you will accomplish the much more difficult task of actually getting the dump. This doesn't mean you are bad person, it just means you aren't in a position to accomplish this particular task.

I am happy to help newbies, but you need to understand that this isn't something that someone can just tell you what to do. It's an involved technical task that has certain minimum requirements of knowledge and motivation. It's like someone who has never done any RC stuff before asking you "how do I build an RC airplane?" You might give them a general outline and  point them toward some resources with more specifics, but I suspect you'd agree that trying to spoon feed them the entire process on a forum would be a waste of everyone's time.

Finally, on a practical note: Without a programmer who both has the camera and the knowledge required to do a port, there's no hurry to get a dump. The dump isn't useful until such a person is available, and someone who can do the port will by definition have the knowledge required to obtain the dump. Getting the dump beforehand would just save them a relatively small part of the overall work.
