CHDK and Firmware versions: an ignorant's question

I am new to CHDK. I understand that the CHDK version must match the firmware version, but am not sure exactly why. More accurately, my question is whether there is reason to try to to install CHDK for a different firmware version if chdk for the firmware installed in my camera is not available. Is there a chance this might work, or work partially, or is it necessarily going to fail? If so, why?

CHDK uses functionality from the Canon firmware. To do this it must know the relevant addresses, which may be different between versions. If the differences between firmware versions are small enough, it might be the case that a CHDK port for one version also works (or at least partially) for the other.
