usb remote help

Hi,  I'd like to control shutter release with a picaxe micro.  I've wire one of the channels to a usb cable & plugged into a Canon G9.  When I send the channel high,  the lcd screen switches from live to the last picture I took & no picture is taken.

Just check that I've wired this up right-: Using a standard usb cable you might use to connect phone to pc.  Mini usb plugged into camera,  other end wired to microcontroller. red cable to +'ve black to ground.  Could be the voltage is not high enough (~4.2V)  but I am a bit confused by http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/USB_Remote_Cable

With the usb plug facing me as above I have the right hand side pin connected to +'ve and far left connected to ground.  Is that right?

Have you enabled USB remote ?

Your camera sems to be switching to playback mode.

Which Picaxe evaluation board are you using ?

You need to obtain a mini 'B' receptacle (enable Javascript to see image)  so you can put a multimeter across the contacts to measure the voltage.

Hi David,

I did use a similar usb connector as you describe to test voltage,  I've taken a pic here,  with + - as I've connected shown. http://www.wizfamily.co.uk/images/stories/chdk/usbrecep.JPG
I'm using the picaxe servo board http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/docs/axe024.pdf
Oh,  yes,  I've enabled USB remote on chdk menu.
The voltage across +- contacts I've measured is 4.21V

regards

If that drives standard servos, surely the pulse is only one to two msecs long ?

In which case, CHDK cannot detect it.

You need a device such as gentLED that stretches the pulse to 400 msec.

should have explained,,  I'm using two of the servo outputs to drive servos,  the other I've just tapped high with a suitable delay then low, (haven't used the servo command here,  just HIGH 4 pause then LOW 4.  (I've checked with a meter & the port indeed goes high for approx 600ms then low to finish of my subroutine to take a picture.  This signal is measured at the other end at the usb receptacle.  Do you think I've got the polarity right?

Download this.
Temporarily rename existing DISKBOOT.BIN and use downloaded one.

Enter ALT mode and generate your pulse.

'USB' should be displayed at top left.

You can also test that by connecting camera to PC using the standard USB cable.

If 'USB' is not briefly displayed, swap your connections.

Hi,  thanks for the firmware,  usb does not show up.

Strangely the camera is now trying to shoot displaying record mode even on my original firmware,  the camera sends out a beam,  focuses,  then occasionally shoots.  I built a remote trigger this morning to see if something is up with my rig but the results are the same.  Seems like its doing a half press,  the occasionaly a full press.  I downoaded canon's remote utility & it fired flawlessly from the pc.  Couldn't work out how to test your firware with this though
