I was looking at the G12 in the store the other day (as an alternative to my SD940).  Then I saw this thread and thought maybe I could look at a G10, save a little money and work on the port for that.   Except everywhere I looked online,  the older G10 is a lot more expensive than a brand new G12.   What am I missing here  - why would I not just buy a G12 ?

The G10 was a very limited production run camera. The higher cost of it is likely due to it being more rare; if you're trying to save money you could probably find a G11 at a better cost (not to mention they reduced the resolution of the sensor, however the physical size (of the sensor) is still as big, which in itself is one of the highlights of the G series -- in other words, the G11 will vastly outperform the G10 in low light or fast action situations).
English doesn't borrow from other languages -- it knocks them down in dark alleys and rifles through their pockets for loose gramar.

Yeah, I agree... for many of us it is not simple to just blindly send 50+ to somebody just to see if something could be arranged.

On the other hand, there is interest. So if somebody actually does it, many of us would be willing to pay a sum to make it available.
I've ported one camera from scratch, worked with two other forum members on their firmware versions of that camera and ported to a fourth firmware version just because I'm a nice guy and a couple of people asked nicely.  I have a "change firmware version porting tool" that I'm working on that I hope to release to this forum in the next week or so.

So what if I made this group a different offer ?

I am willing to try the port to the G10 on the condition that somebody (preferably in the USA) will ship their camera to me to use for the port. Count on it being gone for a many as two months but I really hope it would be faster.  You will also need to pay the shipping and insurance back when I'm done. No guarantee that I can get it working although the odds seem good - I will return your camera to you regardless. There is some small risk of loss in shipping.

You need to decide if you are willing to trust me with your camera.  Feel free to check my profile :
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?action=profile;u=13245
and read my posts and decide where my head is at.  Especially the postings on "my" thread (shared with many other CHDK fans) :
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=5855.0

So how bad do you want CHDK on the G10?  You would have needed to do something like this anyways if you hired a student to do the port and my offer is basically free. Were the students supposed to buy their own G10 with the money you were hoping to contribute ?

For me, its an interesting way to try out a different camera and to  test my porting tool but "no skin off my nose" if nobody cares enough to actually want to take this step.

Feel free to PM me.

Added Note :  if I port your camera then you get your firmware version to be the one ported.  If I port somebody else's camera - it may not be your firmware version.

EDIT May 1 2011 : No responses to my offer - I guess CHDK is really not that important to any G10 owner afterall.  That's fine - the offer still stands.  PM me if you are interested.

If I would live a bit closer, I wouldn't mind sending the camera. Under my current situation it is sort of impossible.

This is a shame. I do love the extra MPix of the G10 and would love to use some of the CHDK but... That's the way it is!

Hopefully another member lives closer to you and can part with the camera for some time.

Thnx

Hi waterwingz, I really appreciate your offer, but, especially as I am in Germany, sending my G10 to the USA would be too expensive. So I would prefer donating via PayPal.
As for the quality of the G10 compared to the G11 and G12, I can only say that I had the lens replaced for 250 dollars when the G11 was already out, because I'm so convinced of the G10's picture quality. I make large 31"x23" prints from RAW files and therefore I love the detailed 15MP of the camera. I shoot mostly in ISO 80, so noise is no problem at all. Also, for cropping and any kind of postproduction, the 15 MP give you more headroom. You can compare the picture quality of all G- models with the comparometer here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM - switch to "all" cameras.

I agree - sending a camera half way around the world with two trips through Customs is not practical.  However, this not about money for me so I have no interest in the Paypal option. But based on your comments about G10 image quality,  I think that  I will keep an eye on eBay and see if I can get lucky on a bargain

I would really like to have CHDK on my G10. It's not a perfect camera, but it's a very good one, and anyway have no money to buy another one. Having CHDK on it would make it even better, and I'm sure it will make me happy for some more years.

waterwingz, for sure there is interest in your work (or whomever will succeed). Don't estimate the interest only by replies in forums. If the hack will be available, you will see people crowding to get it. And some will pay, for sure.

I am ready to donate via PayPal, or similar. Can not send my camera, I live in Romania. But I'm ready to do testing (I'm on Mac).

Hope that the hack will be available in a reasonable time, otherwise I will consider selling my G10 (didn't know it was a limited build) and get a 11 or 12. But I would definitely prefer to keep my G10!

@altero :  Thank you for the offer but I really have no interest in financial gain from working with CHDK.  Aside from being unfair to the tens of thousands of hours others have put into making CHDK happen,  even at minimum wage it would be prohibitively expensive to even think about paying somebody to work on this.   I do it for fun as a hobby - kind of a mental health thing that gets me away from work.

Well,  I got two casual offers to lend me their cameras.  I haven't pursued it farther but I did take a look at the G9, G10 & G11 ROM downloads and current G9 & G11 ports.  I was really hoping there would be some short cuts there but at first look,  that does not appear to be the case.  Now that its summer time, I have a long list of yard work and home maintenance tasks to start on so software work time will be cut way back.  I'll spend a couple more hours this weekend to size up the effort but at this point cannot make any promises to work on this soon.

Some news .. just "won" an eBay auction for a G10.

You G10 owners convinced me this was a better camera than the G11 & G12 option as long as the price was right.

Working on shipping and delivery details now - like everything else in life there are "complications".

So,  here's my updated offer - send me a PM with a real email address and I will make sure your firmware version is part of the porting process if you are willing to test each new build I do.

If you just want to lurk in the background, that is okay too.  Although if I get a working 98% correct port where some obscure function does not work quite right before I move on to something else you might never hear about it. Or I might not port to your firmware version at all if I don't know about it  But I guess "that's life".

G10 owners - unite !  You own a really good camera - let's get CHDK on it too.

UPDATE :  Looks like my "new" G10 is headed my way.  Lots for other things going on but you know I will squeeze as much time as I can into working on CHDK for it when it arrives in a couple of weeks.  I'm excited.
