<<<<Do NOT use the "Firmware Update" method, this do NOT work on the SX1 !>>>
I, like others have found that out.  "Autoloading" as an alternative has been mentioned but  I don't know what that means ?  Can anyone help /tell me in simple words how to get the CHDK to work on my SX1 is ?  help!!! please !!!

If you're working with Windows, just follow this guide: Installing with Cardtricks.
Note: This works only with SD cards up to 4 GB capacity !
;)  ...just start the camera with the LOCKED SD card, this way CHDK starts automatically...

Many thanks ! after a bit more brain work than usual..your posts..following links I found out what 'cardtricks' was all about (for a time I thought it was a windows 'game'!!) eventually I   formatted a 4GB card with 'fat16' , transferred the two zip files onto the card ,made it bootable ,lockced it and it now autostarts in the camera (sx1) it took some time also to work out out which buttons would bring up the 'alt' menu. Great!!
I greatly appreciate the work of those developers who create the CHDK etc. I regret not being able to assist there.
I can think of how it  could work event better from the photographers point of view...but what I can imagine may be  either impossible or just a plain nightmre for developers. i.e For the exposure 'meter' in manual mode to show the exposure including the modified slower  speed for example.
Once again, Thank you (and others who have helped) I still have a lot to try out with it..for example Raw files as DNG instead of CRW.
