Hmmm .... this is very interesting and raises a number of issues.
Firstly, your test image does not really prove much because there are no areas of fine detail and no large, plain areas

Vegas rendered the image in just 160 seconds but the movie duration was only 40 seconds and not 80.

The movie quality is far inferior to the AVISynth version, fine detail is blocky and large, plain areas are posterised.

The Vegas version is 33MB, the AVISynth version is 11MB !

When I created the Custom Template, the title was 'Custom Settings' not 'Custom Template'.
There is no mention of Profile, number of reference frames and deblock filter.

It does mention 'interleaving'.

Maybe the template settings available depend upon the type of source image ?

well, if avisynth works for you then im happy.
not sure if Vegas internal encoding will be able to surpass x264 quality, rate of compression or amount of tweaking (did you use meGUI? what profile?). but i took your source and gave it a go (i turned on two passes for an extra quality bust), took 6:30 minutes for this (38mb). not to shabby, but compared to the amount of time you must have put to get generate the shot, 2 hours of encoding is not that big of a problem, and your result is very nice indeed!

note- i'm sure a better encoder could tweak the Vegas encoder to give better compression ratio with out a major hit in quality, but im not. you may consider my Vegas suggestion a proof of concept.

did you use meGUI? what profile?)

I dont know anything about meGUI and profiles so I guess I did not use them.

Can you explain ?

Anyway, it will be useful to learn about Vegas and AVISynth.

I have not downloaded your movie yet.

I do not understand why the AVISynth version was better and a smaller file.

what process did you use to convert the avisynth script to video, in my original post (step 9) i was referring to meGUI as an encoding package to convert aviSynth scripts to x264 encoded video. from gspoting your video i see you used xvid.

I dragged the script onto avs2AVI icon.

Edit:

Your latest movie version is far better quality, especially considering the rendering time.

well encoding is a vast field, enjoy your result and dont worry about the internals.
