Why oh why did Canon choose Quicktime format ?

Why oh why did Canon choose Quicktime format ?

for the ixus100IS/SD780.

This is a pain, many popular free editing programmes have problems opening this.

StereoMovie Maker (using QTReader.vfp) can play them and then crashes if you try to play a second time.

Quicktime 4.0 works with QTReader.vfp but cannot play the Canon files.

The free programme MOV2AVI simply crashes.

Maybe AVISynth can be used (but I think that uses QTReader.vfp) ?

Presumably the next Canon cameras will use this format as well, has anyone managed to convert them to AVI for free ?

Same with the canon Sx1, sadly :)
I use Super to convert them in a format more useable (like divx/h264).

VLC - "The cross-platform open-source multimedia framework, player and server", also converts to all formats you have codecs on your system...

I am a little suspicious of that website, why do you have to click three separate links and :-

Hej,
VLC reads them fine at least, but sure for editing it seems a pain in the [admin: avoid swearing please].
We should just send a ton of mails to canon together because this is so stupid to use that sucky format (I hate Quicktime, I removed that virus long time ago from my computer and will never have it on again).

If you have to convert every file, it sucks as well.

Oh and with the mass mail, write one sentence or two about old powershot A style being dead. :/ I need a new one with the IS to replace my old A540 when I won't bother taking my super zoom with me. A590 was perfect, except for the 20i/s video. Damned.

I have installed VLC and it plays the movie which then immediately disappears.
From a quick look at the documentation, I do not see how to convert to an AVI using any codecs on my system (such as the lossless HuffyUV).

This will be far too complicated for many users.

One could also use mencoder or ffmpeg for conversion.
And use mplayer for playback.
If mplayer can play a file, mencoder should be able to transcode it.

You might also try MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac/Windows XP/Vista, I use on Mac with good results.
