custom resolution settings?

Hiya all!

Im new to the whole CHDK and firmware-hacking.
For one of my projects I need to set a camera to a custom resolution besides the manufacturers presets. This question is somehow general, cause I haven't actually bought a useable cam yet.

Is it possible to adjust the camera to a completly custom resolution?
That would mean to me, that the final image only consists of parst of the captured pixels on the sensor, E.g. only 100 by 100 pixels from the center of the sensor. So the final image would be 100 by 100px large.

I have had a look around in the documentation and found the property case #24 for digicII Sensors. As far as I understand it, you can only make use of it to set the camera to the manufacturers preset resolutions. The other thing I found was the grid section in the docs. But this only means a layover as osd for orientation while taking pictures, right?

I am looking forward to your answers. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

This has been discussed before somewhere.

Hacking this to Canon's JPEG output is probably extremely difficult, but limiting the range of pixels in CHDK RAW output is a fairly simple coding task. Don't know about CHDK DNG, but it's probably not overly difficult to crop while saving either.

Hey fudgey!

Thanks so far. That sounds good to me. jpg would have been nice but raw should do the trick as well.

Do you think it is possible to show the 100 by 100 px enlarged to fit the display as live view. And would it be possible to vie the small picture in play-mode as "fullscreen"?

No not really, for either of those things. Even viewing it at all in any more requires a lot of work to get the colors right?
