Extending an Intervalometer script to force longer exposures at night

Yay! A CHDK Forum! Why didn't I think of this sooner :-)

I've been making really nice Time Lapse films using the Ultra Intervalometer and MakeAVI to stitch them together.

As day turns to night, however, the A590's auto setting doesn't give a very long exposure time.

Ideally, I'd like to find a way to extend the Ultra Intervalometer script so that it tries to keep a quite high level of "brightness" in each image, even if it has to push the exposure time upto 2 seconds or more (which value I'd like to set).

Does anybody know what function calls I could use to achieve this?

What might it be called where the camera measures how much exposure it needs to achieve a picture with a certain average brightness (is there even a term)?

Very excited to hear back from somebody who knows  :D
