A compact photodetector for serial comms to a robotic pano rig

While developing a robotic camera rig for panoramas, the need for a photodetector mounted above the camera Print button arose.

The sensor had to allow the button to be operated and be unaffected by bright, ambient light.

The solution is shown below.

A surface-mount photo-transistor is mounted in an aluminium tube that fits inside an O-ring.
The O-ring attaches to the camera with double-sided tape.
The tube is connected to the O-ring with resilient black vinyl material so that the Print button may be operated.
The electrical connections are to two gold-plated sockets spaced 2.54mm apart.

Interesting! Any progress on serial comms?

Yes, it is working fine.
It is a very simple method, it just sends three bytes twice.
The receiving device can acknowledge it has received the bytes correctly but does not have to.
The uBasic command 'send_data a,b,c'  is used.

Someone is working on a far more sophisticated serial comms feature that is faster, has extensive error-checking and allows a master camera to talk to a slave.

Is anyone working on unlocking the serial console built into firmware?

I do not know of anyone doing that.

hi david,
i hacked a moving light rig for panoramas myself, see here
[noembed]http://vimeo.com/5552505]moving camera head[/noembed]
its just a proof of concept, didn't take a single picture with it yet.

to my question, whats the purpose of your photo sensor hack?
do you want to use it for detecting when a shot was made?
can you control the print led at sufficient intervals to pass more info?

Very nice !
I know someone who will be very interested in this, I will send them the details.

whats the purpose of your photo sensor hack?

Someone making a robotic head similar to yours wants to send the zoom position and parameters entered into a script to a Picaxe.
Picaxe will then know how many photos to take and how many rows, etc.

You can pass three bytes of information with each 'send_data' command.

I am just finishing the documentation but require certain information.

You should have received an email from me earlier.

waiting for the documentation, microcontrolling chdk is the way to go!

btw. yes, i [just saw] received your email and will act on it asap.
btw2. do you know why i seem to show the vimeo video twice? i used

According to acseven, you have to place the link between [ noembed ][ /noembed ] tags.

Who makes these 'moving light' devices ?
